I never understood exactly how packers worked....

And what is the difference between say upx and armadillo?

From a tutorial:

PE packers are programs that take a PE file, as described above, and compresses them to much smaller sizes. They also tend to encrypt the file in order to make it difficult to reverse engineer or see its strings like we did above. The packer will place insert its own routine into the file so that when the program is run, that routine will decompress the file on the fly when in memory.

Different packers have different routines they use to compress and encrypt the file. Some are more difficult to reverse engineer while others compress the file to a smaller size
