I believe my computer has been infected by ctfmona.exe malware. Symptoms: Extremely slow start-up, continuous restarts, wallpaper was changed with message reading "Warning! Spyware detected on your computer. Install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer.", and a screensaver that has little bugs crawling across the screen.

I installed Zone Alarm antivirus and it found a file called ctfmona.exe. I removed that file but it is still experiencing the same symptoms.

Hi,

Sorry for the delay!

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

You don't appear to have a software anti-virus running.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors:

- Antivir PersonalEdition Classic
- avast! 4 Home Edition
- AVG

Next,

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
  • (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
  • DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next replyalong with a new HijackThis log.

Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:

Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

I downloaded SDFix and extracted the files. After rebooting in Safe Mode, I ran SDFix. It ran and then prompted me to reboot by hitting any key. I rebooted again and SDFix began running again. While it was running, two windows errors appeared during the "Finishing Malware Check".

Windows Errors
1) NTVDM.exe encountered a problem and needs to close
2) Find String (QGREP) Utility encountered a problem and needs to close

SDFix also gave an error "The system could not find TEST0812.TXT".

SDFix ran through a few more messages (Final Check & Starting Catchme Rootkit Scan) and then got stuck on "Finishing".

How should I proceed?

I attempted to run ComboFix but it got hung up after it rebooted. It didn't appear to produce the report log.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.

DSS will do the following:
  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
    malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
    • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.

OK...I just ran dss and it restarted when it got to...."Examining Registry". After restart, I initiated dss again and it rebooted at the same place. I checked for the two log files and they were not created.

What next?

My computer seems to be getting a little better. It is now faster restarting. I'm able to access the internet via IE. However, I'm still receiving a lot of system error messages. They are mostly related to Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger.

Hi,

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
