Helping my daughter via phone/e-mail so will need some patience. After running AdAware, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster and MS Antispyware here's the HijackThis log.

All comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Don

Hello DynoDon and welcome to BleepingComputer. Sorry for the delay.

There's not really alot wrong with this log Don, is there any specific problem your daughter is having? All I see is a questionable 'Search Assistant' site, a messed up Incredimail installation, and an Adware weather program.

You are using a slightly outdated version of HijackThis, which is OK for now. The latest version gives us a bit more information. Please download and install the newest version, v1.99.1, from this HijackThis download site.

You have Microsoft AntiSpyware running. This is a good program, but it may interfere with our fix. We need to disable it for now:

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
- Click on Tools, Settings.
- In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
- Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
- Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
- After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
- Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
You'll need to reenable the above real-time protections after you get the all clear.

Download System Security Suite from here: System Security Suite Download site.
Unzip it to your desktop and install the program. Do not run it yet.

Configure Windows to enable viewing of Hidden and System files.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://resultsmaster.com/SmartOffers/Servi...omeLeftPane.htm
^ Questionable search site

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ImInstaller] C:\DOCUME~1\TEMP\LOCALS~1\Temp\ImInstaller\IncrediMail\imloader.exe -product IncrediMail
^ Looks like a stuck Incredimail installation
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WeatherOnTray] C:\Program Files\Hotbar\Bin\4.6.1.0\WeatherOnTray.exe
^ HotBar adware

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following files and folders if found:

C:\Program Files\Hotbar\ <--Folder

Use System Security Suite to clean out temporary and temporary Internet Files.
With all other windows and browsers closed:

- Open System Security Suite.
- In the Items to Clear tab select:
--- Internet Explorer (left pane): Cookies & Temporary files
--- My Computer (right pane): Temporary files & Recycle Bin
- Press the Clear Selected Items button.
- Close the program.

Reboot and post a fresh HJT log.

How much memory in the machine? WindowsXP likes 256 meg as a bare minimum.

There are a few items running at startup that do not need to be running. Preventing them starting would save a bit of memory.

I'd like to hear the results of my previous suggestion and see a new HJT log before making any further recommendations.

The log is free of malware. As far as trying to speed the machine up........

The usual advise to run Disk Cleanup, and to Defrag the hard drive applies.

Opening the Task Manager/Process tab and noting what processes are using the most CPU time can help track down an errant application or service. With just the Task Manager open the "System Idle Process" should be using 90+% of the CPU time.

The following items are starting with Windows, but do not NEED to run. Running them only when needed and not all the time will free up memory for better uses.

The prefered way to stop an item from running at startup is from within the application itself. Open the app and configure it to not run at boot. Some application will not offer that option.

Second best to to disable the app at startup using the System Configuration Utility. Start, Run, type in msconfig and click OK. Open the Startup tab and uncheck those items you do not wish to run at boot.

Either of the above changes are easily reversed.

Global Startups can often simply be removed from the Start menu, All files, Startup folder.

Lastly, you can prevent the item from starting at boot by 'fixing' it in HJT. Here is the list.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPHmon04] C:\WINDOWS\System32\hphmon04.exe
^^Media card reader for some HP series printers allowing them to read digital camera memory cards directly. Only needed if you use this feature

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Share-to-Web Namespace Daemon] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Share-to-Web\hpgs2wnd.exe
^^"HP's exclusive Share-to-Web software makes it easy to share content with others through our affiliate Internet websites." In other words an application that allows users to upload scanned images to their personal webpages if desired. Available via Start -> Programs

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msnappau] "C:\Program Files\MSN Apps\Updater\01.02.3000.1001\en-us\msnappau.exe"
^^Updater for the MSN toolbar that can be downloaded onto IE. Calls home every day or so to "update" the toolbar

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.EXE 1
^^ Weather.exe is an application providing you with the latest weather information on your traybar. The software is considered adware by some and can safely be removed from your system to save resources.

O4 - Startup: Webshots.lnk = C:\Program Files\Webshots\Launcher.exe
^^ webshots.scr is a utility which downloads images daily for your desktop and makes changes to your desktop appearance settings intermittantly. This is a non-essential process. Disabling or enabling this is down to user preference

O4 - Global Startup: eFax Live Menu 3.3.lnk = C:\Program Files\eFax Messenger Plus 3.3\J2GDllCmd.exe
^^eFax Send button for eFax Messenger Plus. Available via Start -> Programs Disabling instructions available here

O4 - Global Startup: eFax Tray Menu 3.3.lnk = C:\Program Files\eFax Messenger Plus 3.3\J2GTray.exe
^^eFax Messenger Tray Menu system tray icon for eFax Messenger Plus. Available via Start -> Programs. Disabling instructions available here

O4 - Global Startup: Harmony Monitor.lnk = C:\Program Files\Intrigue Technologies\Harmony Remote\EasyZapperMonitor.exe
^^USB Detection for Harmony brand remote controls. Does not need to be running in background all the time. You can run it when you are ready to upload to your remote.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
^^Resource hog. Does not need to run at startup.

Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the help. A clean log is what I was after. Your comments on what’s running at startup is icing on the cake.

Truly appreciate the help.
