Hello there, I have been working on this computer for a co-worker and through the use of SDfix, SuperAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware, and just some general knowledge I think I have been able to remove a lot of infections including adware.BHO, Fake.Dropped.Malware, Malware.Trace, SOME instences of Trojan.Vundo, Rogue.Multiple, Trojan.FakeAlert, Adware.Agent, Trojan.LowZones, Trojan.Downloader, Adware.ISM, Adware.Webhancer and the reason it was brought to me... Spyburner. Nevertheless, I am still getting some traces of stuff when I run Super or MBAM so I obviously haven't cleared everything. I have posted the DSS Logs below and can/will post past Scan Logs from MBAM or SUPER if needed. THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE HELP!

BTW, She is running Windows XP Home and currently only uses "ATT Security Center" for Virus, Spyware and Firewall protection.

Hello Graphics Guy,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! After ComboFix has completed you can reenable them all, then come back online to post the reports. Thanks!

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hi Tea,

Thanks for the real quick reply. Just FYI the Computer is disconnected for the network except when I've downloaded updates for programs. I am currently jumping files and logs between the "sick computer" and a computer I use during repairs and disinfecting. Anyway, I just ran ComboFix and here is the resulting log along with a HJT log. If you don't mind please give me some ideas of what is happening and what you are doing as I have been trying to learn HJT logs and repairs for sometime and just submitted an app. to the Training Program here at BC. I am very interested in how you guys do this. Thanks.

Hello,

You're welcome.

This system had Both Vundo and PurityScan infections. I don't really know what all else you did before you got here, as I see all sorts of other tools that you've downloaded, so I can say what other infections there might have been. We aren't done here yet. We still have to get the leftovers and do some clean up.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: {f0491186-e5b2-cf78-1bd4-f10439eae612} - {216eae93-401f-4db1-87fc-2b5e6811940f} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmuluwxi.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {217AF9D5-F0D2-F65B-7310-0A00C26E0A38} - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\SysShCom.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [QdrModule16] "C:\Program Files\QdrModule\QdrModule16.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [lgUAALIAcM] C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\rkxshulc\zgjczmni.exe
O21 - SSODL: strwinutil - {139F4717-9BD5-E24A-50FD-07D29F848116} - C:\Program Files\egkjeke\strwinutil.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Look for this folder and delete it if it's there :

C:\Program Files\egkjeke

Reboot your computer.

Please run a scan with MBAM and post the report in your reply, along with a new HijackThis log. How is it running please?

Thanks,
tea

Ahhh, well see I knew it had Vundo but I missed the purity scan.

Anyway, I took care of the HJT items and then when I went to delete "C:\Program Files\egkjeke" it denied it because there was a .dll inside that was in use still. So loaded Process Explorer, found the offending .dll, which was running under explorer.exe, killed explorer.exe, restarted explorer.exe, deleted the folder with no issues Then proceeded to reboot as directed. Everything booted up fine and before running MBAM I checked for the offending .ddl one more time in process explorer and it was in deed gone.

MBAM came back as a clean scan and the log is posted below. All in all it seems ot be running fine. I haven't reconnected it to the network yet to verify it yet due to finding that .dll. Thought I'd wait until you said to check it.

Thanks again.

Hello,

This should have been the .dll : strwinutil.dll

* Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quote box below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\g74.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mmuluwxi.dll
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\SysShCom.dll

Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hI2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\at1
C:\WINDOWS\system32\1064a
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\rkxshulc

Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{216eae93-401f-4db1-87fc-2b5e6811940f}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{217AF9D5-F0D2-F65B-7310-0A00C26E0A38}]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer\run]
"lgUAALIAcM"= -

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again.

After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks,

Alright, Ran the script in ComboFix. It did not require a reboot and after I saved Log I ran a HJT scan. The logs are posted below.

Hi Austin,

Running all right? Let's make it faster.

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Alright Tea,

I have updated her Java, fixed the items you mentioned in HJT and went ahead and removed/deleted the other tools I had loaded to repair prior to posting my log this morning.

Looks like everything is working beautifully. Thank you again so much for the help. If you ever had the time I would love to know a little more about how you decided where to begin with the logs and move to from there. I have been reading logs in the forums for a while along with just different tutorials and am still just fascinated how you all do it.

Of course I saw some slots opened up in the training program so I signed up today for that and hopefully I can get going with that and learn more. I just like to help others with their problems but find I'm just not experienced enough with malware to fix everything.

Anyway, Thank you again SOOO much for you help today. If you have any other suggestions of things I should install for this lady, my co-worker, let me know.

Thanks again,

Austin

Hello,

Wonderful to know.

This is what I tell everyone :

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

Spybot-Search & Destroy
A tutorial on using Spybot to remove spyware from your computer may be found here. Please also remember to enable Spybot's "Immunize" and "TeaTimer" features.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here:
http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

It is VERY interesting, and a never ending learning process. DSS and HijackThis told me what the infections were so I could choose the best tool to use on those particular infections. Lots of variables, research, learning and reading go into every log we do. You'll see.

Take care!

Tea,

I gave the computer back to her and gave her some tips on preventing this in the future. Everything works wonderfully again and she said to thank you very much.

Thanks again for all the help and i'll see you around.

Austin

P.S. I think we can close this topic. Problem Solved!
