I am using windows xp professional just purchased and installed on a new computer about a month ago. 2 strange things are happening.
1. sometimes at log in the screen goes to an extremely low resolution and only 4 colours. If i try to reset from desktop properties it just goes right back as soon as i click on "ok" to close the properties window. a reboot usually solves the problem.

2. The computer sometimes refuses to load user profiles (there are 2 ... 1 for me and my roommate) I get the following error messages

windows was unable to load the registry. this is often caused by insufficient memory or insufficient security rights. (event id 1508)
It then says there are "insufficient resources" to complete the function

windows cannot log on on beacuse your profile cannot be loaded. check t see if you are connecte.......etc etc (event id 1500)

again it says there are insufficient resources

earlier this week i had event id 1505 which said windows could not log on the user but has logged you on with the defualt profile for the system
again the remark about insufficient resources

I have no reason to suspect i am short of memory i have 1 gig of ram and a good quality processor, and the computer is still realtively new.

when these things first started to happen to my profile i deleted it in safe mode and created another one. this solved the unable to load profile issue but not the screen resolution one.... but today it happened to my roommates profile..

any ideas? I can post a hijack this log if it would be helpful.

Thanks to everybody who takes the time to read this.

This is a difficult problem to narrow down. But, I've got some suggestions to "treat" the issues.

First, perform a scan for malware using one of these free, online scans (just in case something has slipped by your protection):
Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully:

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Scan Only - no removal

Next, try this free tool to cleanup your profile: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en

Then, update your video driver from the website of the manufacturer of the video chipset.

If you find that there is an infection, I'd suggest posting over in the Am I Infected forum for more expert advice: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
