Hi everyone, new to this site and looking for some help.

I have been working on a friends computer which had been affected by a number of viruses. He thought some were to do with the xpa anti virus. I tried to do a fresh install of xp but everytime it got to the screen saying install xp or repair installation the computer shutdown. I tried 2 different discs with the same result. Going into windows I found the format function would not operate, either from control panel or C prompt. Kept saying disc was locked. Eventually using another utility I managed to format the disc but I still cannot load xp, keeps shutting down at the same point. I tried re partioning but still no good.

Any ideas please?

Cheers

Gordon

Check the hard drive, using a diagnostic from the HD manufacturer.

Use the XP CD to delete all existing partitions, then format/partition/install.

Thanks for the reply. Already been down the format- re partition route.

I will check the hard disk out, but could a disk problem cause the install to fail at exactly the same point each time?

There are only so many possible things that can be wrong...either the media is bad/scratched (unlikely, since you say you tried several CDs) or the hard drive has some problem that is halting things.

I guess that we could throw the motherboard in as a suspect, but...what for?

Did he by any chance put in different RAM recently? Bad RAM can do goofy things.
