what kind of .avi - MS or Apple? Already compressed below dv quality, standard or high def?

If you're talking MS avi below dv try the Total Video Converter.
At dv or better use Cleaner, Squeeze or Procoder.

A good all around purpose converter is SUPER. It converts many of the popular and less common formats into many different types. You'll need a bit of knowledge to use it though, but I think you'll be fine. Just think the higher the number, the higher the quality and filesize
"If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way." - Bertrand Russell
