Hello,

Well to give you a short history, the issue really started with some spam being sent from my gmail account to all my contacts. Then avast started popping up with Vundo infections every so often, I tried to scan with avast and get rid of the trojan but it didn't work. I started searching the net, and found Vundofix, it didn't work either. After much help from Boopme and DaChew (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/148070/tough-vundovirtumonde-infection/?p=836941) I was asked to post here.

Here's the main log, and will follow with the extra log, generated by DSS.

Hello ovicidal,

You have downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware previously, so I want you to update it and run it again.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hello ovicidal,

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please disable Windows Defender before using Hijackthis, as it will prevent it from working.

To disable Windows Defender
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Where is Avast finding Vundo? Can you post the location?

I started searching the net, and found Vundofix, it didn't work either.

VundoFix does not work on Vista computers.

Thanks Mike!! (I won't call you SifuMike, my Sifu wouldn't be too impressed ;) but kudos!!)

I started searching the net, and found Vundofix, it didn't work either.

VundoFix does not work on Vista computers.

...Damn Vista!!

Avast picked up the infection in C:\Users\mikado\AppData\Local\Temp\*****.dll. Avast hasn't acted up since I did some of the cleaning up recommended by other users (see link in my 1st post in this thread). The PC's been running fine, it hasn't been lagging since I did some of that cleaning and some of my own (unused files/programs...etc.)

Here's the hijackthis log (I figured by "new" log, you ment to rescan my pc after I checked and fixed those files you pointed out.) But I have to say, the files are still picked up in the new hjt log, but not as they were, I guess you'll see that. On with the show!

Hi ovicidal,

The usual reason Hijackthis fixes do not work is the the registry protectors (Spyware Doctor and Windows Defender) were still enabled, or you did not close all the windows and browser when using it.

Lets try again.

Disable Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor

To disable Spyware Doctor from running on your system startup:
1. First, disable the OnGuard Tools. This way, when you exit Spyware Doctor, these tools won't stay resident in the background.
2. Click the "Settings" button on the left side.
3. Click the "Startup Settings" link.
4. Uncheck "Run at Windows Startup".
5. Click the "Apply" button.

To disable Windows Defender:
Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {08B0E5C0-4FCB-11CF-AAA5-00401C608501} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {2670000A-7350-4f3c-8081-5663EE0C6C49} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {77BF5300-1474-4EC7-9980-D32B190E9B07} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {92780B25-18CC-41C8-B9BE-3C9C571A8263} - (no file)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix checked"

Reboot your computer and post a new Hijackthis log,
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

I edited my original post because I just "ate my hat". You're right, Spyware Doctor was running, and so was windefender. Originally I took off the check next to "use On real time protection" but just "x'ed" out the window, not shutting down windefender. Ok so that's done, I ran HJT checked the O9 files - with all windows closed, ran the fix, rebooted, and they're still there.

here's the log.

Hi,

Let use a different tool to remove those. They are not malware, only old items for clean up.

Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporary folders.

Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  • In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.
  • Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:
    • Reg - BotCheck

      File - Additional Folder Scans

  • Do not change any other settings.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
  • Save the file to your desktop or other location where you can find it back.
Use the Add Reply button and attach the file in your next post.

If the file is too big to attach then zip it and attach it.
