Hi over the past couple of days or maybe weeks, it seems like an eternity, I have been trying to remove a ad company from my desktop on my other computer. Right now I am on my laptop. I have found similar problems on this site but their remedies just don't seem to work. I believe the company is w-w-w-dot-com. It will not let me change my desktop. I have run my antivirus, spybot search & destroy, and lavasoft adaware. They have all taken things (sometimes a lot of things) off my computer, but have not fixed my desktop. It is driving me crazy!!! I have tried to install combofix but an error comes up when I try and load it. It says date error, but my date and time are correct. Any and all help is much appreciated.

You should not be using Combofix unless instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab, then the "Customize Desktop..." button.
Click on the "Web" tab, then under Web Pages, uncheck and delete everything you find (except "My Current Home page").
Also, make sure the Lock desktop items box is unchecked. Click "Ok", then "Apply" and "Ok".

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Did you reboot the computer after using MBAM? If it encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you need to restart the computer so the malware can be fully removed. Failure to do so will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Your log indicates some files will be deleted on reboot. If you have not rebooted, make sure you do this. When done, rescan again with MBAM and post the new log report.

Did you follow these instructions?

Go to Start > Control Panel > Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab, then the "Customize Desktop..." button.
Click on the "Web" tab, then under Web Pages, uncheck and delete everything you find (except "My Current Home page").
Also, make sure the Lock desktop items box is unchecked. Click "Ok", then "Apply" and "Ok".

Again your log indicates some files will be deleted on reboot. If you have not rebooted, make sure you do this.

Also, let me know how your is computer running.

That looks better.

What happens when you right-click on the Desktop and choose properties?

Check to see if the "Themes" service is disabled.
  • Go to Control Panel > Admin Tools > Services or click on Start > Run and type: services.msc
  • Press OK.
  • Click the "Extended tab" at the bottom to view all the info on your services.
  • Scroll down the list and find the service called Themes.
  • When you find the service, double-click on it or right-click and choose "Properties".
  • In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Start" button.
  • From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Automatic".
  • Click "Apply", then "OK" and close any open windows.

When I get to the display properties I am unable to change my background.

When I go to Themes windows it has already started and is in automatic mode.

Cheers

Are the tabs greyed out or is this what's happening? Cannot change desktop wallpaper.

If the tabs are not greyed out please note that the solution in the above link involves making changes in the registry. Always back up your registry before making any changes.

You could also click on the link below:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to #142 and click "Allow Wallpaper/Background Changes" in the right column. Go to File, choose "Save page as" All Files and save http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/wallpaperenable.reg to your desktop. Double-click on that file and choose "Yes" to merge it into the registry when prompted. Once you get a successful message delete the file and reboot.

If the tabs are greyed out, lick on the link below:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Scroll down to #128 and click "Desktop and Screensaver Tabs" in the right column. Go to File, choose "Save page as" All Files and save desktoptab.reg to your desktop. Double-click on that file and choose "Yes" to merge it into the registry when prompted. Once you get a successful message delete the file and reboot.

Again, these solutions involve registry changes so back it up first.
