Hello Philip134 and welcome to the BC forums. Yes, sysupd.dll is part of the problem. The bigger problem is that it is a part of an isrvs infection. I also see that your current Operating System has not been upgraded and patched with the latest available service packs. I strongly encourage you to update your OS to SP4 for Windows 2000. It includes many security updates and patches that your current version does not include and so you are vulnerable to many infestations that an updated OS could protect you against.

Let's see if we can get rid of your current problems. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchURL = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: IE Update Class - {5B4AB8E2-6DC5-477A-B637-BF3C1A2E5993} - C:\WINNT\isrvs\sysupd.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINNT\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [czjaey] c:\winnt\system32\czjaey.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [t93S36T] wmn_ci.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gupaexnlhnknxpfncudnzg] C:\WINNT\ymhlzlwi.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0] "C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\EbatesMoeMoneyMaker0.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [cys2RWf7l] wifmdmat.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {6685509E-B47B-4f47-8E16-9A5F3A62F683} - file://C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\Sy350\Tp350\scri350a.htm (file missing) (HKCU)
O16 - DPF: ADVFN US - http://www.advfn.com/advfn_us8.cab
O18 - Filter: text/html - {950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E} - C:\WINNT\isrvs\mfiltis.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #2

Now let's uninstall some of the bad applications using the Add/Remove Programs item in the Control Panel.
  • Click Start
  • Click Settings
  • Click Control Panel
  • Click Add/Remove Programs
Look for the following programs and if you find them click on them to select and then click the Remove button. Answer yes to any prompts asking if you are sure.Ebates MoeMoneyMaker (or anything with Ebates or MoeMoney in the name)
Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINNT\isrvs\ <--folder
c:\winnt\system32\czjaey.exe
wmn_ci.exe (search for this file and delete all instances)
C:\WINNT\ymhlzlwi.exe
C:\Program Files\Ebates_MoeMoneyMaker\ <--folder
wifmdmat.exe (search for this file and delete all instances)

Next, let's clean up the temporary folders:

Download CleanUp! and install it. Start CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run to complettion.

Step #4

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Many thanks for your help.

All the steps worked fine,except

deleting isrvs folder - virushunter.ico Access denied. Same response for the files within the folder.

czjaey.exe already gone

wmn_ci.exe none found

wifmdmat.exe none found

I see what you mean by having patience while Cleanup! works!!!

All the result of being well looked after when I was employed, but not very good at looking after myself since working on my on account!!!

I have SP4 ready to instal.

Here is the updated log.

Philip

Hi Philip. Well, it looks like we got most of it but there are still a couple of items haning around. Let's see if we can finishe this thing off.

Please print off these directions (or copy/paste them into a Notepad document and save it to your desktop). Next, follow the steps shown below.

Step #1

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:* Restart the computer.
* As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
* Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
* Press Enter.
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ffis] C:\WINNT\isrvs\ffisearch.exe
O18 - Filter: text/html - {950238FB-C706-4791-8674-4D429F85897E} - C:\WINNT\isrvs\mfiltis.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINNT\isrvs\
OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Post your new log file back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi Philip. That log looks great. Congratulations! We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IESpy-Ad. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening.

You should also have a good firewall like ZoneAlarm or Kerio Personal Firewall (both are free) and a good anti-virus application like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your system up to date and clean visit Windows Update monthly, run AdAware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
