Posted 25 May 2008 - 01:02 AM

I was helping my Partner prepare a log to post her problems here, and thought I would run a set on my machine just for interests sake. I was a little surprised when kaspersky said I had the above problems.
I am running AVG Antivirus, and Adaware. Both insist that my system is clean.

Cheers

Hi,

You were luckily never infected with Bagle. What Kaspersky finds are some mails you received with the Bagle infection in the attachement. Luckily you never clicked the attachement.

The mails are located in the Trash folder in your Thunderbird, so delete everything present in the trash folder in your Thunderbird.
To do this easily, open Thunderbird, click File on top and select to empty trash. Then also select to compact folders afterwards.

To get rid of these:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{A9747FCD-66BD-4E5E-A19C-6424787D6899}\RP113\A0014737.exe/file30 Infected: not-a-virus:AdTool.Win32.WhenU.a skipped
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{A9747FCD-66BD-4E5E-A19C-6424787D6899}\RP113\A0014737.exe Inno: infected - 1 skipped
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{A9747FCD-66BD-4E5E-A19C-6424787D6899}\RP115\A0033682.exe/WISE0087.BIN Infected: not-a-virus:AdWare.Win32.Gator.1050 skipped

Flush your system restore points:
To do this, you have to disable systemrestore and enable it afterwards again.
(note: this will delete all your system restore points and malware that were present in it).

How to disable system restore in XP <= click me for instructions with screenshots
After you disabled System Restore.... Reboot.. and after rebooting, enable it again, so a new systemrestorepoint will be made. A clean one now!

Let me know if that solved your problem.

Hi,
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the delay in responding. for some reason I am not getting emailed notifications.

Before I proceed,

Is there anyway to tell which attachments are infected, I'd like to warn whoever I got them from, or at least know who's emails to block?

I've had a look thru my trash for both the sender, and emails on those dates, but the flagged senders aren't in my trash, and the dates are before I put this machine together.

Everything currently in my trash is from people or places I know, and I have opened their attachments. This is very weird.

Cheers

Brent

It could be possible that you won't see them there anymore - and you already deleted them from the Trashfolder there previously (the mails are there since 2006), and that's why the "Compact folders" option is needed. Because Kaspersky may read them from there.

Edit - now I see, is it possible that these paths are backups?

C:\Downloads\Thunderbird
C:\Downloads\netscape backup

If so, then it's easy to delete. Just delete all backups there and create a new backup

Got them. I also found another set hiding in my documents and settings folders, in the old mozilla folder from Netscape, I guess from when I built this box. I copied my mail files over from my old one and pasted them in there. forgot all about them.

Right, those are all gone now.

The log shows another set in in my current thunderbird trash folder like this one
"C:\Documents and Settings\Vagrant\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\1fxbx28e.default\Mail\pop3.paradise.net.nz\Trash/[From Dihemu <dihemu@enlight.com>][Date Wed, 21 Jun 2006 01:34:44 +0100]/Ester.zip Infected: Email-Worm.Win32.Bagle.gen skipped"

That is my current trash folder. I can't see those emails in there. If I just delete the trash folder, will thunderbird build itself a new one, or get upset and sulk?

What were the Mailberkley and wisesfx things?

Cheers

Hi,

If you do the "Compact folder" for the trash folder - it will be gone as well. But yes, if you delete the trash folder, Thunderbird will recreate another one again.

What were the Mailberkley and wisesfx things?

They were just infected emails you received 2 years ago. It had a zipfile attached. If you opened the zipfile and ran what's inside there, then you got infected with Bagle.

Sweet, compacted and then deleted and made new ones.

Restore points has been flushed.

Anything else I need to do?

Not really since you weren't actually dealing with an active infection, but with some mails where infected zipfiles were attached.

However, I suggest you update your AVG to version 8. :)
