Go into add/remove programs and uninstall adtools service.

You have a Peper infection

Download the removal tool :

Peper Removal Tool

!!! Please run this twice with a reboot in between.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

Grinler---THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN----you folks are tremendous to help out!

I did what you said BUT when trying to use add/remove for adtools service I got a message saying "An error occurred while thrying to remove Ad Tools Service. It may have already been uninstqalley. Would you like to remove ad tools service from the add or remove program list?" I said no.

I then used the peper removal tool and got a message from it that said "no peper files were detected".

Then I followed your instructions for using Hijack This to fix things.

couldn't find any of the files you indicated I should delete.

Here is my latest Hijack this log below. Any more advice?

Just fix this entry:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {016235BE-59D4-4CEB-ADD5-E2378282A1D9} - C:\Program Files\CxtPls\cxtpls.dll (file missing)

and your clean.

Log looks clean...great job!

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help.

Grinler,

I'm sorry to say  that after reading and doing the "simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe..." that Norton antivirus found a bunch of adware and some spyware---much of it it successfully deleted and many it didn't. So I followed Norton's instructions to find out on their site how to get rid of each one. The first one I tried called for opening the registry. I did this and it just momentarily opens and then disappears. I read on another posting you made to someone that this is from Malware. So I did what you told that member to do---run Hijack this. Can you help me? Here is the Hijack this log:

Yup, you got some crapware back on there. On a side note, I would advise you gfet a better AV program than Norton. Something like mcafee or AVG. Even AVG Free is better in my opinion.

You have a Peper infection

Download the removal tool :

Peper Removal Tool

!!! Please run this twice with a reboot in between.

Then,

Click on start, settings, control panel and double-click on add/remove programs. From with add/remove program uninstall the following if they exist:

Adtools Service

Then,

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm going to do all this in the morning...including getting a better antivirus.

I went through all recommended steps. Grinler helped me with his/her last reply on March 6. I ran through all these steps and now am posting the resulting log. I could not locate my earlier topic to post there so am starting a new one. Thanks in advance. Here's my log:
