this will get on peoples nerves i`m sure but there is this
lingering problem of my program button
in the start menu
completely not responding or opening.
Can anyone give me the slightest clue
as to why a button would stop working???

oh thank you so much for getting back to me on this,

it never opens, even in safe mode.

i put a hjt log up for help a month ago, but everything looked good apparently,
just there were a lot of unnecessary startup apps which i've now
stopped, using the database here.

recently i've not been able to install a tmgenc dvd program trial version,
recieving error 1606: could not access network,
%userprofile%$startmenu$program$startup$

as it says startmenu, i`m under laymans hope that if i can fix this problem.
the startmenu will open again.

once again.
really appreciate any help you can give
thanks very much for you time

Are you the only user on the machine?

If you log in as another user can you use the start menu? If you log into safe mode and log in as administrator, can you use it?

there is another user and logged in as them the button opens,
in safe mode as the administrator the button opens,
but in safe mode as myself it won't open.

sorry for the late reply,
juggling lots of things at the moment,
really appreciate your help though Grinler.

Sounds like something in your profile got corrupted. You may want to backup your data, delete your account, and make a new one

Electrical interference, one off computer problem, faulty software, malware, problem with hard drive, user error, random event - take your pick. If it happens again then you need to look for causes.

Soltek QBIC, Pentium 4 3.0GHz, 512MB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB, Netgear 54Mb/s WAP, ridiculously expensive Satellite Broadband
Windows XP Home SP2, Trend Micro Internet Security, Firefox, Thunderbird, AdAwareSE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, A-squared Free, Ewido Security Suite.
