Hi there. I believe I contracted a virus / trojan through Awola 6.0 a few weeks back. I started a thread in the 'Am I Infected' section, here's the link for that full thread: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/143729/infected-by-awola-60-and-could-really-use-some-help-removing-it/

Long story short, I believe this virus was contracted on Wednesday, April 23 around 745pm. My operating system is Windows XP. Whenever I double-click on any .exe file I get an all-black window, and a little window above it with an error message similar to this:

"16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop\Winamp.Ink
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:054d IP: 013d OP: f0 85 38 90 3a Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

I can right-click certain programs and select "Run As" to use them, but can't double-click on anything. I also think this virus has taken over Administrator duties, changed my registry and is preventing me from properly installing programs. It was also preventing me from running anti-virus scans, but I believe we have found a way around this, and I was finally able to process a scan with DSS (and Hijack This). I also did a scan using the Kaspersky scanner. I will copy and paste all logs below.

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Hello

Apologize for the delay in response we get overwhelmed at times but we are trying our best to keep up.
If you have since resolved the original problem you were having would appreciate you letting us know If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.
alternate download site

DSS will do the following:
  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
    malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
    • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

Next
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hey, thanks for your help. This problem has NOT YET been resolved.

Not much has changed since I ran the original DSS and Kaspersky scans (logs included in my first post), I don't think I've installed anything new. The first time I ran DSS, it took several minutes, downloading and installing HJT, running the scan, and providing the two txt files you have requested. I tried running it again today (three times), and it took about one minute, for some reason only providing a MAIN.TXT file, which I have included below. I also checked the Deckard folder and found today's scans, which only have a main.txt file inside.

Hopefully you can use the extra.txt file produced previously (listed in my first post).

I also have a problem where the computer will sometimes start a loud clicking noise, and then often freeze, leading to the BSOD. This began before the computer was infected with the Awola virus, but happened infrequently then, a little more frequently since. I tried running the Kaspersky scan again today, and it froze up during the rather lengthy timeframe involved in running Kaspersky. Let me know if you need it run again or if the original one will suffice (also listed in my first post).

Here is the MAIN.TXT file from today's HJT scan:

Hi,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Next step,

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
  • (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
  • DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next replyalong with a new HijackThis log.
-- If this error message is displayed when running SDFix: "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue..."
Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.
%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe

Thanks for these suggestions. I do not wish to reformat at this time. Hopefully what we do here will be sufficient. It may take me a day or two, but I will print out and follow your instructions, and then post again to let you know the result.

Hey. I have a question for you. If you check my original thread from the "Am I Infected?" board (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic143729.html) you will see that this trojan blocked .exe files from working on my computer, and the error message that results.

I downloaded Smitfraudfix to my desktop at that time, but couldn't get it to work. Later in the thread, it was suggested to change .exe files to something else like .bat, to trick them into working. I have done this successfully to use several programs. I tried this right now with the SmitFraud icon on my desktop, and succeeded in getting the prompt from my firewall (to block or trust the program). After that, when I double-click the SFF icon, I still get the same error message as described in my other thread.

I have a SmitFraudFolder here with 20 .exe files, the main ones being process.exe and reboot.exe, along with a host of others (404fix.exe, dumphive.exe, genericrenosfix.exe, etc.) Should I modify all 20 of these files to .bat files, or would it be enough to just change the process.exe file? Hopefully this makes sense. Thanks!

I'm not sure how to proceed until I hear back from you.

I tried renaming all 22 of the .exe files in the SmitFraudFix folder as .bat files, but as soon as I "run" the SFF program, it creates a whole new group of 22 .exe files, prompting the same error message.

I am really hoping you can help me figure out how to proceed. This problem has been driving me up the wall for 2 months now, and I just want to get it fixed. The computer cannot run .exe files, as they are blocked by this trojan. What do I do next?

Hey. I have run SDFix as per your instructions, and I believe we may have had some success here. It removed some trojan files, I'm not getting all the error messages at startup, and .exe files are now functioning.

To reiterate, I was not able to run Smitfraudfix earlier due to the .exe issue, which should no longer be a problem. Do you want me to run this program now? Having bypassed that step, I ran SDF and HJJ , and will post these two logs below.

Over the past few days, the computer making that loud clicking noise and freezing up has been happening a lot (though not yet since the SDF run). Do you think that was caused by this trojan or other malware, or something else? Also, please note that Awola6 is still listed in the "All Programs" list.

I will await your next post, and want to thank you again for your much appreciated assistance.

Hi,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply along with a new Deckard's System Scanner log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
