Late Saturday night, this computer (my sister's) was hit fast by XP Antivirus...she's savvy enough to know to avoid a program that threatens viruses can "creash" her comp. She contacted Norton for help, but she reports they wanted an absolutely ridiculous amount of money to fix something that she bought their software to prevent from hppening in the first place. Anyhow, we worked together for nearly the entirety of Saturday to get rid of this thing...we followed the tutorial here to manually remove it, but as you can see, the manual fix didn't get it all. We're not sure if there's more left, either--I installed SpyBot S&D and it caught three refs to XP Antivirus...turns out they were hiding in a different location than the tutorial suggested to look. The HJT log also shows a different version than the tutorial had, though my sister says that the screenshot looked exactly right. Also had Ad-Aware 2007 scan her twice; once it crashed for reasons unknown when it got half of what it found, the second time it worked to get rid of the rest. After all of that, we didn't have time to run Kaspersky's scanner.

She reports that her computer runs much slower after the infection.

Anyhow, I understand everyone here is very busy, but I do hope there's time to get to this soon. My sister is not used to forums. I can step her through things, but I hope it's possible to get this cleaned up before that, since it would be much easier to do things while I have the computer. Thank you in advance!

Here's the combined DSS/HJT log--only "main.txt", as it did not produce an "extra.txt" file.

Welcome to Bleeping Computer, please be sure you have read and followed the
Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log, Instructions for receiving help in cleaning your computer http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/
All advice given is taken at your own risk.

I apologize for the wait, if your issues are not resolved, read the instructions posted above and then follow the directions below. If you no longer need help, I would appreciate a quick post letting me know so I can close your topic.

If you still need help, follow these directions:

1) We need first to disable TeaTimer that it doesn't interfere with fixes. You can re-enable it when you're clean again:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
* If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
* On the left hand side, Click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
* Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer.

2) Follow the instructions in this link, when you finish, restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log using Add Reply.

I'll have to call my sister tomorrow about this as the computer is long out of my possession. If she still needs help, I'll find a way to get another log posted. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback and once again, sorry for the wait. I see over 400 folks waiting now for help and there are just not enough volunteers. Make sure she has the link to the tutorial:
How to remove XPAntiVirus (Removal Instructions)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/111715/how-to-remove-xpantivirus-removal-instructions/
if she still needs it and completes the instructions before posting a new HijackThis log.

Thanks...Phil

All right I have my sister's new Hijack This log. We did go through the linked tutorial to get rid of this malware but it didn't get rid of every trace, so we want to make sure it's all gone. We also followed the instructions for making of a new Hijack This, so now here is a new one from today. This is without the TeaTimer program on. Thank you.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll take a look. For your information, at times we want a DSS scan because of the detail, but when we ask for a HijackThis log, which is much smaller, please post that instead of the DSS.

I need to know if the Hosts file (01 items in the HJT log) was altered like that on purpose.

C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_02\ <<< Java is out of date, see this information:
http://forums.spybot.info/showpost.php?p=1...amp;postcount=2

popcaploader_v10.cab <<< information about this item we are removing:
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/grayware/v...E=ADW%5FPOP%2EA

1) How to make files and folders visible:
Click Start > Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
You may reverse this for safety when we are finished.

2) Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune
http://www.atribune.org/public-beta/ATF-Cleaner.exe
Save it to your Desktop. We will use this later.

3) Start > Control Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall XP Antivirus if there. I suggest you uninstall anything you know does not belong there.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/popcaploader_v10.cab
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [e] C:\Program Files\XP Antivirus\xpa.exe

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Right click Start > Explore and navigate to these files/folders and delete them if there.

C:\Program Files\XP Antivirus\ <<< delete that folder and contents

6) Run ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
Click the Empty Selected button.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

7) Let's run a good malware scan as a doublecheck:
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
* Please post contents of that file & a new HJT log in your next reply.

How is the computer running? Any malware issues?

Thanks...Phil

Sorry it's taking so long...this is a very busy time for my sister, so it's been a bit difficult to get a hold of her so that I can step her through your instructions.

I did get a chance to talk to her about part of it, though--she said the HJT log host files, the 01 on the list, she had been using an online game a year or so ago from Atari, but no longer uses that game, so those, I imagine, don't need to be there.

Again, apologies, and thank you for your patience and help.

All right, I got a hold of my sister today and she followed all the steps you posted except the Java update--didn't have time for that right now. Everything seemed to go well.

Anyhow, here is the new HJT log followed by the MBAM log:
