Howdy,

There was a power outage in my area this morning. I was on the Internet when my computer shutdown.

When power was restored I re-booted the computer. I got a black screen with a horizontal white flashing bar(about 1/4 inch long) in the upper lefthand corner of the screen.

This situation lasted about 4 minutes and then the screen went totally black. 3 more minutes went by before Windows finally loaded.

Any ideas what the problem may be ? Perhaps something got fried ?

Thanks for your time,

Dennis

Ouchies. Sounds like a video card problem. Not sure.

But I would say you might want to invest in a surge protector so this doesn't hapen again or get worse.
If I am helping you and I do not respond within 24 hours, please send me a PM. :)

I have a surge protecter, I guess it did not do its job though.

Sounds to me like you need to run the fixmbr command...from the Recovery Console.

The black screen with the cursor at the upper left top...is the tipoff.

You probably also need to run chkdsk /r on your system...anytime there is a power outage or hard shutdown of any type. Follow the directions for running it from My Computer/Explorer and select both options (scan, recover).

Try removing the power cord and put it back in a minute.

Thanks to all for the replies !

My computer fixed itself !

I restarted the computer and things are back to normal without my doing a thing. (I wonder how this happened ?)

I will cross my fingers and see how it goes from here.

I printed out your responses to my post and will keep them handy in case things go awry.

Thanks Again for your help,

Dennis
