OK, i will try to make this story short and sweet! I had to resort to using my old Compaq because my son spilled pop all over my laptop! The operating system is Windows ME.. I had to reinstall the drivers for the Nvida drivers to even get it to work. Now im having all sorts of problems. My biggest one right now is not being able to install any sort of virus scan or firewall. I have downloaded Zonelab but it just tells me that it cant be used.. Im sorry i forgot the actual message, but basically it tries to finish the download and then tells me it cant. I have tried going to other sites as well, but nothing works. I have done a couple of different free checks for DLL problems EXE problems(of course, i didnt pay for any of them to try and "fix" what they found because i just dont know if i trust them) .. If it helps to know im also getting Krnel32 errors, along with DLL errors. I have tried installing a few different games for my kids and get either or of the messages when it tries to launch! Am i pretty much just SOL or does it sound like there is something to fix? I think in the back of my head that im just all screwed up and there isnt going to be much to fix! I did do a factory restore a while back before all the errors started to show up because the explorer that i was using was causing problems and i was unable to get it to uninstall. HELP lol!!!
Thanks so much in advance..
Kelly

Welcome to BP Kelly.

My biggest one right now is not being able to install any sort of virus scan or firewall.

The best virus scan you can install for WinME is AVG Free Edition 7.5.519, its free. You only need one virus checker installed, check you Control Panel - Add/Remove for other versions you have installed. :thumbsup:

For a free AV look here: FREE avast! antivirus 4.x Home Edition, anti-spyware & anti-rootkit for Windows

This statement sounds promising for you:

We support more Windows versions (from Windows 95 to Vista 64 Bit) than any other anti-malware product. No matter what system you have, avast! has it covered.

Thats bull Kelly, have a read on AVG forum. People have asked about support for 98 and ME and they only say its not guaranteed.

Did it install and run ok?

You can always use Avast! Home Edition 4.8.1201 if you not happy. :thumbsup:

So i tried the new link, and it didnt even make it half way through the download!!! I think that my computer is infested and im just not going to be able to get anything to work at this point until i get it cleaned out.. Now, getting it cleaned out is going to be the biggest challenge! The worst part is that even after doing the factory restore it has the dll and krnel errors.. I think im just sunk! Or at least looking at an expensive repair somewhere or an expensive purchase of brand new! Neither are my idea of a good time! Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

But did AVG download and install? :thumbsup:

Other than that you get a friend to download it and stick it on a flash drive. :flowers:

Keith, Nope it didnt download!!!! I think i have been taken over by Aliens! I now have an icon in my task bar that lookes like a silver octagon with what resembles a red worm with a yellow head. I cant click it, right click it, nothing. Its just there. I find no programs in my add/remove that would have anything to do with it! Im stumped!

suggest try running this scan to see what IT drags up?

Superantispyware; guide on how to install and run

If you have not already got a Downloads folder , I suggest you create a new folder in My Documents, and name it Downloads ;

Installing superantispywareSuperantispyware is found here

http://www.superantispyware.com/index.html

Download to the Downloads folder the free exe to superantispyware from here

http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfi...ANTISPYWAREFREE

you install superantispyware by clicking on the icon in the downloads folder ;
it will launch the installation process;
follow the instructions and I suggest you ask for a default installation ;
ensure it creates a desktop icon for you ;
once the program has been installed it should ask you if you wish to update the program ; say YES

if it does not ask you , you need TO fully update the definitions by opening the program and find the ‘check for updates ‘tab in the bottom left of the menus you see; click on it and it will do the update for you ;
I suggest you ask it to check for updates again once the first update is complete just to be sure

please then reboot your computer ; it is preferable to run the scan in your computers safe mode;

please open this program from the desktop icon
please run the scan while you are OFF line and do not have the computer doing any other work while the scan runs

go to the preferences tab on the right
on the General tab I suggest you disable the scan on start up

on the Hijack protection tab I suggest you tick BOTH items; this enables the program to give you a Hijack home page alert if your home page gets changes ; if you DO get a home page hijack, when you boot up the computer superantispyware will open and tell you the home page has changed and will ask you if this is a legitimate change;

in statistics/logs- go to the bottom and you will see two boxes asking about keeping a log of scanning results and saving empty logs?

Tick both of them

Then go back to the main screen and see the tab that says scan your computer? Do you see that ?

Click on it

A screen will open ;on the left hand side ensure your FIXED drive ( most probably the C drive) is ticked;
Also tick in there any other section that is used and attached .
On the right had side you see three scanning options?; please click the Complete scan option

OK; you are now set to scan

Please then click on the ‘next’ tab and let the scan run please run the scan while you are OFF line and do not have the computer doing any other work while the scan runs

From my experience running this program the complete full scan CAN take many hours to run depending on how much is on your computer so be patient and let it run; maybe go for a cuppa or watch a favourite program while this one runs

Once the scan IS complete you will be presented with a box telling you what the scan has found ( if anything); if harmful objects have been found click on the OK button ; on the next screen all the harmful objects should have a check mark beside them, ; click ‘next’

A notification should appear that

‘quarantine and removal is complete’

click ‘ok’
and then the Finish button to get returned to the main menu

If you have run the scan in computers safe mode you will need to reboot to computer normal mode

If you have run in computer’s normal mode I suggest you reboot to enable the ‘fix’ the program has performed to consolidate

You then need to retrieve the scan result

Open the program and return to the statistics /logs section ; locate the most recent log ; left mouse click on it to highlight it and click the ‘view log’ tab

The log should appear in maybe note pad ; you need to copy and paste that log for examination
Once you have posted the log please close the superantispyware program

alos; AVG 7.5 IS still available as I run it BUT the support runs out in December 2008

I also think you need to be in the am i infected section ; lets get this shifted :thumbsup:

Now what should my next step(s) be?? I still have that strange icon on my task bar and it is really starting to bug me as to what it is!!! I just want my computer to be running right again!!
Also, not sure if this can be touched on here or if i need to go somewhere different in the forum but I need to get my DLL and EXE files fixed as well! I cant run certain games due to the errors that occur. You guys are great so far!!!!! Thanks for all the help getting me to this point! God love the internet!

I suggest you clear out your temp internet files folder and delete all cookies, then fully update , reboot and run superantispyware again
I WAS going to suggest you run the malabytes program but I beleive it is NOT compatible with your win ME computer?
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Support for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista.

try asquared

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

exe is

http://download6.emsisoft.com/a2FreeSetup.exe

install it, fully update the definitions , you may need to do this twice; then reboot and run the program on a full computer deep scan OFF line ; it too will give you a lsit of 'problems' and ask if you wish to quarantine them; I suggest you DO quarantine as you can retrieve them if necessary
it is the type of scan you do need to know what IS on your comp as it can produce what are called 'false possitives'

let us know how THAT scan and the repeat superantispyware scan goes?
try that?

If this is an old backup machine, presumably it has nothing of any particular value on it, so why would you go to this much trouble? FDISK the hard drive, switch off the computer entirely for thirty seconds, then reboot, reformat and re-instal. Make sure you are booting from a CD to eliminate any possibility of cross-infection.

Pause to reflect that there is no such thing as a guaranteed 100% effective anti-spyware or anti-virus problem. The best you can hope for is that it is 100% effective against all of the malware which was current five minutes ago. This also applies to so-called "zero-day" protection. The bad guys are always one step ahead!

FDISK is the only procedure which nothing can possibly survive - just one of the thousand-and-one reasons why DOS refuses to lie down and die.

ps Avast! is indeed an excellent program, but it does bring a heavy performance hit which you might find unacceptable on an older machine.
