Hi. Not sure if i've been highjacked, but computer doing strange things for a while now...Previous Active X display problems, NTLDR went missing ( windows only loads when i press F12 and choose boot from the hard disk drive C ) ...right clicking no longer works, and Zone Alarm stopped loading for a while but ok at moment.
Probably all operator- related!
Anyway, have run Spybot search and Destroy and Ad Aware SE.

Hi there, Unfortunately, this is not operator-related.
You're dealing with some nasty worms and viruses in here. Even Sasser is present.
I see you're using 2 different antivirus too.. AVG and McAfee. Several antivirus together can give problems and decreases the reliability of it seriously! I also see some traces of a previous version of AVG on your system. Didn't you uninstall that properly?

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup

* Download and install CCleaner
Do not use it yet.

* Please set your system to show
all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`:
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINNT\system32\iexplorer <== this folder
C:\WINNT\system32\msmsgri32.exe
c:\winnt\system32\qsws <== this folder
c:\winnt\system32\ccdew <== this folder
C:\WINNT\System32\WinGate.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\iexplorer <== this folder
C:\WINNT\System32\IEXPLORE.EXE

Do not delete any other files than the ones here above! There must be in the right folder! Do not delete files with the same name that are present in another folder than above!

* Start Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner

* Reboot your system back to normal mode.

* Perform an onlinescan with housecall AND Etrust and let it delete everything it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I'll take another look.

If you had any problems with deleting files or noticed any other problems during your fix, let me also know in your next reply.

Er Hello Miekiemoes.
Thank you for replying so quickly...had hoped i would have had a bit longer before having to tackle my registry!!!!
Get the feeling it might be easier to buy a new computer.
However, will do as suggested first.
NB McAffee was only installed about 3 weeks ago by a friend , and my problems started way before that.
My AVG , like the Zone Alarm, has also been "disabled" before now, and so i probably didn't completely deinstall before installing another one. Sorry!
When i have done everything, will post back another log as requested.
Think this may take some time.

Hi Madeline,

You really don't need to buy another computer. We're going to get rid of this. I've seen much worse.
When your system is clean again, we'll take care of your antivirus and firewall. As long your system is infected, the firewall and antivirus wont work properly, because the malware disables them. But don't worry... we can deal with it. ;-)

Just take your time, don't rush and if you're having any problems, it's not a disaster, we'll deal with it step by step then. Just tell me afterwards.

Well,ran HighJack This and deleted the 48 items.
Couldn't reboot in safe mode ( pressing F8 prompts NTLDR missing, press any key to continue )
Had to press F12 and choose Disk C
In Explorer, ..msmgri32.exe WinGate.exe EXPLORE.EXE already gone.
I deleted ccdew and qsws.
Couldn't delete iexplorer ....cannot delete bcsrv.exe. Access is denied. The source file may be in use.
Ran CCleaner.
Ran Housecall( 27minutes worth...) Detected WORM_Nach.DAM (1) and TROJ_LOWZONES.BM but wouldn't delete or clean .
Ran Etrust. Detected 15 pests but won't delete unless i buy, and i am not using a credit card over the internet at the moment.
So, ran HighJack this again, and here is the log:

This is much better!! Well done!!

Ok, because you can't boot in safe mode (we'll deal with that problem later), i'll let you use another tool.

* Download Killbox to your desktop.
Click killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".
In the field labeled "Full Path of File to Delete" copy and paste next:

C:\WINNT\system32\iexplorer

Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot.. Click YES
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Your system will reboot now.

Ignore the 'missing errors' you'll get.

Then..

*Go to start >run and type: services.msc and click OK
Scroll down in that list until you find the service Task Manager Help
Doubleclick on it. In the window that will appear, click on "Stop" (if not greyed out) and change the Startup Type to disabled.
Click apply and OK.

Do the same for: LAN Client (search this service in the list, click stop and set startupttype to disabled.

Start HijackThis and check and fix next line again:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update Machine] Linux.exe

Can you also tell me which files exactly the online scanner couldn't delete?
I need the name of the file and the folder where it is in.

Reboot again and post a new log.

Read here how to deal with your missing NTLDR

Great!! That log looks clean again!

Now you see, it's not necessary to buy another computer.. you fixed it yourself ;-)

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (housecall and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates, so visit ASAP http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ to update your windows, because it's not up to date now and you really need it!!

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again!

Yippee!!! :thumbsup:

Think "fixed it yourself" is pushing it a bit.
Anyway, BIG THANKS to you

I do actually have Spywareblaster version 3.2 installed, although wasn't sure what it did.

I also have NoAdware, Fix Netsky, Stinger, ET Remover and Sysclean, then Regedit and RegistrarLite...the latter two have only been run to see what the registry looks like and absolutely not to have changed anything.
Should i delete this lot?

Whilst i'm writing, :flowers: and probably in the wrong forum now, how do i get my double click and right click functions back?
Stopped when i first got my ActiveX display problems. ( now resolved)
Stand alone items on desktop open normally. Something like My Computer , My Documents etc need to be opened via the file menu..
And the only thing that responds to the right mouse is the desktop itself, then i select properties and try to get my picture restored ( have to do this regularly )

Maybe i should just live with this.

Anyway thank you again, and have a nice weekend.

Madeline

PS You're top of the list for my joining offer of holiday accommodation here in Switzerland (although i did write that before i saw how many members there were! )

Let's see if there are any traces in the registry that causes this rightclick and open-problem.

We can give it a try and maybe we'll find something.

Open your hijackthis and choose 'config' (bottom right)
Choose 'misc tools' on top and click: 'Generate Startuplist'
Also check the 2 boxes next to it.
Post that log in your next reply.

I might add i have been into my options before now and set the parameters for the mouse , but that makes no difference.

Judging by the vast number of Logs being posted in the Forum i realise you must be very busy

Thank you

Hmm.. nothing strange in here.

I don't know if next will reveal something, but we can give it a try:

Open notepad and copy and paste next content in it (bold)

regedit /e policies.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer"
regedit /e policies1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer"
copy policies.txt + policies1.txt = Output.txt
del /q policies.txt
del /q policies1.txt
notepad Output.txt

save this as policies.bat ,choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop. Doubleclick on it and notepad will open with some txt in it. Copy and paste this in your next reply.

This opened 2 windows:

1.Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000095
"CDRAutoRun"=dword:00000000

2. this one is entitled Select C:\WINNT\system32\cmd.exe .
It has 6 items listed and looks like a negative.
When i copy and paste it, into notepad , it reverts to number 1
I did do a screen shot(!) using Frontpage and photobucket, but can't seem to send it.

Interestingly though, some double clicking function has already returned...

eerrr, normally, when you run (assuming doubleclick doesn't work for you) policies.bat, notepad will open with some text in it.
Is that policies.bat on your desktop? If so, there must be a txtfile present with the name output.txt on your desktop.
I need that one.

Bet you're glad you started this fix.

Policies .bat is on my desktop, being "standalone" opens with a doubleclick, and results in 2 "windows"

1. Output text in Notepad containing:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000095
"CDRAutoRun"=dword:00000000

2. as described before.
A sort of negative.

This works now!

I also have Output.txt on the desktop, and when opened contains......

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000095
"CDRAutoRun"=dword:00000000

......

If this is of no use, let's stop looking.
My computer and mouse are so much better now, and i am very grateful.
