I have a bunch of IDE drives that I have shelved but have some good stuff on them, what would be a decent inexpensive external with easy hookup so I can check the contents and copy to my machine.

If you wanted to hook them up for a while I would suggest an External enclosure
Newegg had a whole bunch. This will turn your hard drive into an external one which can hookup with usb or firewire depending on the care you buy. You could then just change out the hard drives as you see fit.

Or you could just look for an IDE to USB adapter if you don't want the enclosure.

Hope this helps.
