My computer has been running slowly for the last few weeks, with IE being unusually slow to open windows. Booting up takes an extremely long time (10-20 minutes) and I frequently have had to power down (in mid-boot) because it just sticks in the Windows "loading" screen (with the scrolling blue status bar).

Today, AVG Free notified me 3 times in succession that I had the JS/Downloader.Agent trojan.

In looking at my AVG Virus Vault shows 5 entries over the last 2 months: "Trojan horse Generic10.PG", "Trojan horse Generic9.BRDK", "Virus found JS/Downloader.Agent", "Virus found JS/Downloader.Agent", "Virus found Exploit" (the last 3 entries detected today).

Screenshot below of virus vault:

Attached File  Virus_vault_screen_shot.gif   20.54KB   17 downloads

Can you help me remove this from my system?
Also, is there any way to tell what damage has been done to my system? For instance, have my passwords been compromised?
Thanks.

Hi Tea,

Thanks for your help.

I followed your instructions. The program removals went just fine. On the reboot, Windows may have tried to install and update - hopefully this is not problematic. My system once again was extremely slow (more than 10 minutes) to boot back up.

Followed your instructions on the system restore point, and cleanmgr.

Ran MBAM in "quick scan" mode, it didn't find any malicious items.... that surprised me.

Below is the MBAM log and a new HJT log:

Let me know how to proceed from here.

Thanks.

Hello,

To be honest, I wasn't surprised at the outcome of the scan. :) I didn't see anything malicious in your original log either, but I have to be sure before we do what we're going to do right now. And....I think what's trying to download from MS is Service Pack3, so it's HUGE, and it will take a while, even on a fast connection.

Now let's add some speed to your startup.

The following are not malware, but fixing them with HijackThis will improve your system's speed. None are necessary at startup, and may be started manually at any time. This is up to you.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

Hi Tea,

Ok, I was able to fix most of the items from your list using HJT. There were 3 items that you had listed that didn't come up on my scan:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [Picasa Media Detector] C:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe (User 'SYSTEM')
O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [Picasa Media Detector] C:\Program Files\Picasa2\PicasaMediaDetector.exe (User 'Default user')

The two above listings did not show - although there was a listing with the same intro numbers, but instead of "Picasa" it referenced "Symantec".

I left them alone since it wasn't an exact match - although, I'm wondering - I saw a lot of Symantec references on the scan. I removed Symantec's Norton a few months ago because it was slowing my system down too much. Should I use HJT to get rid of the remnants that are still showing on the scan?

Also, the entry below didn't match exactly in the scan - the first part was the same, after the equal sign it only showed a "?" in the scan. Again, I left it alone since it didn't match exactly.

O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = C:\Program Files\Digital Line Detect\DLG.exe

I know I've had a lot of processes trying to start, so I appreciate you helping me get these cleaned up.

Unfortunately, it hasn't improved the boot issue noticeably.

I've made two reboot attempts. One last night. I watched it stay fixed in the "Windows XP" screen with the scrolling blue bar for about 15 minutes, before I gave up and went to bed. When I checked this morning, the boot had completed.

Tried again this morning, this time it only spent about one minute on the "Windows XP / blue scroll bar" screen, and then went black (dark gray) for about 15 minutes. Went up to get a coffee, and when I returned the wallpaper was showing on the screen and the boot was completed. I'm guessing the whole process ran for about 20 minutes.

I should mention that up until a few weeks ago, this had never happened before, now it happens every time I boot.

A couple additional items that may or may not be helpful:
- The Windows update is downloaded, but not installed. I didn't want to install anything new without checking with you first.
- Prior to contacting you, I had done a system restore to a point about a month earlier (a time I thought was before the problems began). It didn't help. However, it may have removed Flash from my system. When I'm in IE I'm constantly being asked if I want to download Flash update, and the ads on the screens usually have a red "x". I haven't clicked "yes" to download, as I'm apprehensive after AVG said I had the JS/Downloader trojan.
- After the quick scan using MBAM returned no results, I started running the full scan (since I hadn't yet received your most recent response). I got about 4 hours into it with no results before I saw your latest and aborted. Let me know if there is any value in running the full scan to completion.
- Internet Explorer continues to run slow. Take about a minute to open for the first time. Adding an additional tab is quick, but it takes 90 seconds before I can navigate within that tab, or access my bookmarks using Google toolbar. This, with the boot issue, is a development that appeared only within the last few weeks.
- In doing some preliminary searching on the JS/Downloader.Agent trojan, I thought I had seen something about how it might modify the registry in a way to "hook" the startup - could this be related to the slow boot times? Also, the two generic trojans that AVG had logged back in March (which I didn't notice until the other day) could those be related to the problem? That may have been around the time the problems first appeared... although I thought it was a little less than two months ago.
- I'll run the Kaspersky scan this morning, just in case there is anything of value to you in that, while I await your instructions.

Below is this morning's HJT log, in case that's needed:

Thanks.

Hi Tea,
Ok, I ran Kaspersky for critical targets. No malicious items found, but a number of things skipped. Posted below, maybe there is something of use in this report.

Thanks.

Hello,

Run this to get rid of all the messy Norton leftovers :

The Norton uninstall tool uninstalls ALL Norton 2004/2005/2006/2007/2008 products from your computer. It also uninstalls Norton Ghost 10.0/9.0/2003. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039

I'd like to look deeper, since you say this didn't help. Kaspersky showed nothing, and neither has anything else we've run.

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Hi Tea,

Ok, I used the Norton Removal Tool. I couldn't find it on the link you provided, but I still had it on my computer from when I had removed it originally.

Don' know if it took care of the remnants, BUT... my computer on reboot was MUCH faster - basically normal.

The only action I had taken was the Norton removal, and I had also turned my external hard drive off and back on earlier in the day (I did this when I ran the Kaspersky scan - "my computer" wasn't showing the location of the external drive, and I thought it might be a good idea to scan that. So maybe that played a role in the fast reboot?

Internet Explorer was still running slow to open windows - particularly popups. Also, a new tab took 90 seconds before it would allow me to access my bookmarks in the Google toolbar, so no improvement there.

I ran Combifix.... and hope I didn't destroy my computer. It went through it's scan, and showed the log file, however, when I minimize the log file, all the icons on my desktop are gone, as well as the explorer toolbar and all the quicklaunch icons, as well as the start menu.

How shall I proceed? I don't want to manually try to reboot until I get some guidance from you. Also, Spybot Search and Destroy prompted me with a number of changes (seemed mostly related to home page, yahoo and google search functions). I allowed them to proceed.

So, I'm typing this from my backup computer (laptop). I saved theComboFix log to a jump drive and will paste it below. Let me know how to proceed.

Thanks.

ok, was able to shutdown via control-alt-delete.

Reboot went ok, maybe a little slow, but not nearly as bad as it was (couple minutes).

Internet Explorer is still quite slow in opening a window... 90 seconds or so... compared to my laptop which is nearly instantaneous.

Below is an HJT log I just ran.

Hi,

Let's do this and see if IE improves....

Uninstall IE7 and see if it works all right with IE6. Then reinstall IE7.

Also, navigate to and delete this folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared

Seems like we're getting there one step at a time. I know it's frustrating, but you're doing great.

As always, let me know......

Hi Tea,

Ok, removed the Symantec folder. I noticed on the last HJT log there were still a number of entries. Does it make sense to have HJT remove them, or does removing this folder take care of it?

Also, I removed IE7... then reinstalled.
I'm currently installing Service Pack 3, as I was prompted to update manually some IE things that the installer couldn't do automatically.

Still have problems with slowness. Seems to be mainly with opening new windows. For instance, takes a couple minutes for my home page to arrive. Opening a new tab - the tab shows up pretty quickly, but doesn't seem to "fully" load.... can't use Google toolbar for about 90 seconds. Also, tried typing in a URL on a new tab, but it wouldn't start navigating to the new site for about 90 seconds.... had to keep going back and hitting enter.

Also, I think I mentioned earlier, Flash seems to be gone from my system and I'm getting constant security updates if asking if I want to install it. Not sure where I lost it - maybe when I did the system restore before contacting you initially.

Thanks for sticking with me on this - it is frustrating to have things not working, but it is getting better. At least my system is booting up within a reasonable time now. Although, I should mention, it is still a bit clunky. Takes a couple minutes to boot, but seems to spend more time in a black screen (about 30 seconds between the Windows XP blue scroll bar screen and the "welcome" screen) which is more than I remember. I thought it was close to instantaneous before.

For what it's worth, the "Automatic Updates" window just told me this:

"Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1 (KB110806)" could not be installed

Also,
I wanted to ask - do you think I was ever actually infected with the JS/Downloader, or did AVG detect it and quarantine it before it was able to get onto my system?

Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks.
