I have a AMD 3400 2.4 Ghz that is running XP SP2, and it locked up two weeks ago, got a BSDD with a hardware code error message and could not get in no way, not with Safe MOde or any other mode, my tech tried for 5 hours...no joy, he was able to partition it and install a clean set up of XP and it ran fine, so he assumed it was not the hardware....but we had to reinstall the OS with a new install, SP2 Pro again, and i spent last week re installing the software.

BUT, just tongiht, i had the same BSOD a short message saying the system has shut down to protect it and it was so fast i was not able to get the code number....

it begins...

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, pres F8 to select Advanced Startup options, and then select Safe Mode."

code follows and i did not get a copy of it, i just wanted to try to reboot and make sure it would.

I am afraid now that something may indeed be wrong with the hardware and want to try to find out what and if....

i may have caused a memory problem myself by forcing the system with programs that have too high a demand, i.e. some games that have very high demands on grpahics, and my card is not that great ..an FX 7600 games like Oblivion and Crysis, i am a games researcher at times...

so i am seeking suggestions...

the new OS is all installed and stable, i am running defrag now, and i have Outpost and AVG 8.0 on it. Is there a place to find the error message and the code> I seem to recall that there is, but dont remmber where....

I have not re installed some of the major programs yet like 3D Studio Max, and Maya, and i took off some extraneous files so i have over 40GB of free space on the HD now....i was afraid i had crowded things too much....but i am not sure why i saw that BSOD again...i WAS able to restart the system again....

Please search your system for files ending in .dmp (usually located in C:\Windows\Minidump). Then use this link ( http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35246 ) to run an analysis of the last dump file and post the results here.

i hope i got the symbol path right, i used:

SRV*c:\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

here was my report, i did it twice as i thought i might have the wrong path, i was also not sure if i have a 32 or s 64 bit sytem?

it says AMD (64) but was not sure if that meant 64 bit  thanks

It appears that you weren't able to connect to the Microsoft server to get the symbols. Please recheck your connection and the Symbol path to be sure they're right and try it again.

Right now the error message indicates that the error occurred in ntkrnlpa.exe. The statement that it caused the error is inaccurate (from our perspective) - rather ntkrnlpa.exe was where the crash occurred - but wasn't necessarily the cause.

If redoing the dump still doesn't load the symbols correctly post back here and I'll have another suggestion or two for you.

Common causes of bugcheck C2 are firewalls and sound drivers. Try uninstalling Outpost Firewall.

Post some more debug logs if it continues to crash. Use the following tool (your log is incomplete). http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=33471

the following was my previous failure to connect report....

i am frustrated, i was NOT able to get a connection to Microsoft for the symbols and neither debug tool works without it i think...

OK i tried very hard to use both tools. I was NOT able to connect to the symbol data base at Windows even after uninstalling both my Avi Virus and my Outpost firewall AND the Debug program that i had loaded.

No way would this address which was given in the site that the link directed to from here:

http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=35246

work, i tried the address they gave:

SRV*c:\symbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

AND i saved the workspace and ran the debug on the log i have which will be attached here..and the symbols woudl not be read

i do NOT know the correct address to enter..and that one does not work nor does the address that Microsoft gives to do a dump of the symbols on our own system work either, I am downlaoding the entire set of symbols for XP SP2 to try that.

I tried the second tool and it said that the debugger could not be found even when i naviigated to it with the advanced settings and it did a scan but i dont know if it worked.

I have tried my best, maybe you guys can read the dump file, it is stored here:

http://files.filefront.com/Mini050208+01dm...;/fileinfo.html

anyway here is what the second program DeBug wiz you gave me a link for came up with....

As you're not the only one with symbol issues today, I'd expect that there were problems with the symbol server at Microsoft.
The 2nd dump file didn't pick up the symbols either. It's just a different way of getting the dump to work - but it relies on the same symbol server.

Anyhow, check your PM's for one from me.

The dump that I generated was the same as yours - and I was able to verify that the symbol server was workiing. So, this indicates an issue with your dump files makeup.

Since dump files rely heavily on memory, I'd first suggest running at least 3 passes of this free utility (overnight is better). Read the instructions carefully as you'll have to create a bootable CD/floppy to do this. http://www.memtest86.com/
Let us know if it passes or fails.

The next thing to do is to use Driver Verifier to verify your drivers, and then wait for the next crash to point to the driver. The first parameter of the STOP 0xC2 error was a 7 (0x07 in the debugger help files) and this is caused by

The current thread attempted to free the pool, which was already freed.

This leads me to believe that this is a bad/corrupted driver rather than a memory problem. So, the next thing to do is to use Driver Verifier to verify your drivers. Then we'll wait for the next crash and hope that it'll point to the exact driver that's at fault.

If it doesn't point to the exact driver, then we'll have to resort to a "scorched earth" policy - uninstalling and replacing all the drivers until we succeed.

As for Driver Verifier, here's a link on how to use it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/244617

Do this in Driver Verifier:
Create Standard Settings...Next
Automatically Select Unsigned Drivers...Next
Click on "Finish" on the next window, you'll be prompted to reboot for the changes to take effect.
Then wait for the next crash and try analyzing that dump file.

<PAUSE> No unsigned drivers on the laptop that I'm using. I'll have to continue this when I get back to my home system (I'm on my new laptop right now). Sorry

Post some more minidump logs as well. Or you can upload the minidump files if you prefer. You usually need to see 5 or 6 to see if there's a pattern.
