Microsoft XP
In coming home from college I ran Spybot - Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware 2007 on my families home computer they both found many things to delete, including some problems in the registry. The one more serious thing that was found was a trojan. Once removing these things effects were seen on the user that was used for the scans. Now anytime this user logs in the settings for some programs are set as if this was the first time - This happens every time this user (Dave) logs in (Other effects include Changing default printer to the Fax, changing the wallpaper to a common dell one). So now Mozilla, Microsoft Office, and others have these pop ups introducing him to his first time. I think it may have been a repercussion of deleting the trojan. Here is the Deckard System Scanner reports

Alright this is what I did. I noticed that this virus was only affecting one user on the computer (It started doing other stuff like changing the theme to this really small text - forcing the start panel to show nothing - somehow made the My Computer disappear from the desktop). Anyway so I just copied whatever information I needed and then deleted the account and made a new one in its place, and that is working normally. I am still worried so any help with cleaning this would be great!

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days, please post a new HijackThis log. Thank you for your patience.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I had computer problems. I did not see any obvious signs of malware in this log. If this HijackThis log was not run in Dave's log on, have Dave log on, run a HijackThis log, and post the HijackThis log in this thread. The user of the posted HijackThis log should follow the steps below.

You may want to print this page. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

I noticed that you have some programs that need to be updated.

Step 1

Your Java Runtime Environment is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove the older versions of Java Runtime Environment..
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer after all Java components are removed.
Please download the latest Java Runtime Environment.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right. When a new window opens, you will see
NOTE: This page offers files for different platforms - please be sure to download the proper file(s) for your platform.
Required: You must accept the license agreement to download the product.
  • Click to place a check mark by Accept License Agreement.
  • Make the selection corresponding to your computer platform. For Windows, click on Windows Offline Installation, Multi-languagelink to download. Save it to your desktop.
  • On your desktop, double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i686-p.exe to install the newest version.
After you have installed the Java software on your computer, you must restart your browser. You can verify that Java Runtime Environment (RTE) has been installed correctly by clicking on the Verify Installation button on the Welcome To Java and Verify Installation page.

Step 2
  • Please download/locate the Ad-Aware 2008 Free installation file: (aaw2008.exe or aaw2007.exe).
  • Double-click the file and follow the on-screen instructions in the Installation Wizard to install.
  • Click Finish to complete the installation and to launch Ad-Aware.
  • The registration dialog will pop up and prompt you for your serial number. Click Use Free or enter your Serial number and click OK.
  • The program will start and automatically look for updates. If there are updates available, you will get this message: There are new software updates available! Do you want to go to the download location?
  • Click OK. This will open the Update Manager, automatically downloading all available software updates.
  • Click Close when the download has finished and restart Ad-Aware to finalize the update.
  • Run this program as soon as possible.
Step 3

I recommend using Spyware Blaster along with Spyware Guard.Step 4

With Windows Defender, you can manually scan your computer for spyware or schedule the program to perform a scan automatically on a regular basis. You will need to validate your Windows prior to download. Follow the instructions to validate. Windows Defender provides Real-Time Protection that can help block spyware or other unwanted software before it is installed. You can also participate in a community that reports spyware threats as they happen, so when one person in the community detects a spyware application or definition, Windows Defender automatically reacts to help protect everyone who is running Windows Defender.
Please download Windows Defender .
  • Confirm that your computer meets the minimum system requirements to install Windows Defender.
  • Visit the Windows Defender page in the Microsoft Download Center. Click the Continue button and follow the directions on the succeeding pages to download the program and start the Installation Wizard.
  • Follow the steps in the Installation Wizard. You will be asked if you want to participate in the Microsoft SpyNet online community. That is your decision.
  • During installation, we suggest you choose the first option, Use recommended settings.
  • Open Windows Defender, select Options.
  • Under Automatically scan my computer, make sure all boxes are checked.
Windows Defender will check for updates and scan your computer.

Step 5

ATF-Cleaner features include:
  • Cleaning of all user temp folders, administrator only can use this feature.
  • Cleaning of the Java cache, which seems to be harboring more and more malware.
  • Cleaning the cache, cookies, history, download history, visited links and saved passwords. You have the option of checking no if you want to save your passwords.
Please download the ATF-Cleaner by Atribune.
Instructions:
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the boxes to the left of:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch (Windows XP) only
    • Java Cache
  • The rest are optional - if you want to remove them all, check Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
If you use the Firefox browser:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use the Opera browser:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
If needed, Tutorial on ATF Cleaner with pictures.
Do not run it yet.

Step 6

During the process of removing malware from your computer, there are times you may need to use specialized fix tools. Certain embedded files that are part of these specialized fix tools may be detected by your antivirus or anti-malware scanner as a RiskTool, Hacking tool, Potentially unwanted tool, a virus or a Trojan when that is not the case.
These tools have been carefully created and tested by security experts so if your antivirus or anti-malware program flags them as malware, then it is a False Positive. Antivirus scanners cannot distinguish between good and malicious use of such programs; therefore, they may alert you or even automatically remove them. In these cases, the removal of these files can have unpredictable results and unintentional results.
To avoid any problems while using a specialized fix tool, it is very important that you temporarily disable your antivirus and/or anti-malware programs before using the specialized fix tool.
When your system has been cleaned, it is important that you enable your security programs to avoid reinfection.
  • Launch Spybot - Search and Destroy, go to the Mode menu and make sure Advanced Mode is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools > Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the Resident TeaTimer Protection of overall system settings) active box.
  • Click on the Spybot - Search and Destroy TeaTimer, System Startup icon in the List
  • Uncheck the TeaTimer box and OK any prompts.
  • If TeaTimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the Allow Change box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot - Search and Destroy when done.
  • When we are done, you can enable TeaTimer using the same steps but this time, place a check next to Resident TeaTimer and check the TeaTimer box in System Startup.
Step 7

Is this your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? If this is not your ISP, you need to use HijackThis to fix item(s).

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{CAC07F22-9B69-4D03-A26E-8BB3A51069D0}: NameServer = 205.171.1.65,205.171.2.65

Step 8

Please disconnect from the Internet. Please close ALL browser windows (including this one).

Now we will address the HijackThis fixes.

Please run HijackThis and click Scan Place checks next to the following entries (make sure not to miss any):

O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\ssv.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click Fix Checked to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.

Step 9

Your computer may be sluggish due to the many programs loading during startup and running in the background that are not necessary. Windows has a facility for starting programs at startup time. Some of these programs are required for your computer and the applications installed on it to run correctly. A good example of such a program is a virus-checking application that must always run, constantly checking for and isolating or removing files with viruses. Other such programs are not strictly required, or are optional. In some cases, you can gain significant performance enhancements by disabling the automatic startup of these programs. In many cases, the functionality offered by the programs is still available by starting the programs manually by, for example, starting the program from the Windows Start->Programs menu. Media players and instant messaging programs often fall into this category. In fact, it is common for many modern software applications, when installed, to add programs at startup that add items to the system tray or shortcut (context) menus in Windows Explorer to provide quick access to the features and functions of these applications. While they may be useful, they do increase boot time and consume system resources. It is advised that you disable these programs so that they do not take up necessary resources or slow the boot time.

Other than ScanRegistry, SystemTray, StateMgr, antivirus program entries, and firewall program entries, very few others need to load and run.

Read the articles below to see if it applies to your computer problem with being slow to respond.

If you decide that you want to stop the Optional Fixes in your startup, let me know and I will give you a list with instructions. You would not be removing the program itself, just removing them from your startup.

Step 10

Let’s run ATF-Cleaner to ensure no malware is hiding in temporary folders and for general computer cleanup to free space on your computer.

Step 11

Please run HijackThis in Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log so I can make sure that all the malware was deleted according to plan.

Please advise me of any problems you still have.

Step 4: I verified my computer and then downloaded Windows Defender but the downloaded file was a ".msi" and my computer said it didn't know what that was.

"Is this your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? If this is not your ISP, you need to use HijackThis to fix item(s).

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{CAC07F22-9B69-4D03-A26E-8BB3A51069D0}: NameServer = 205.171.1.65,205.171.2.65 "
How would I know if that is my ISP?

Once these questions are answered I will continue down the list of steps.

Also, whenever I log off of Dave's account I recieve the Ending Program window for something called ShellIconHiddenWindow and something else with a similar name - should I be concerned about that?

Step 4: I verified my computer and then downloaded Windows Defender but the downloaded file was a ".msi" and my computer said it didn't know what that was.

For information and guidelines, please see the following:
File Extension, msi details Try the Free scan for .msi related errors.

Locate Missing .msi files.

"Is this your Internet Service Provider (ISP)? If this is not your ISP, you need to use HijackThis to fix item(s).

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{CAC07F22-9B69-4D03-A26E-8BB3A51069D0}: NameServer = 205.171.1.65,205.171.2.65 "
How would I know if that is my ISP?

Put the IP's, 205.171.1.65 and 205.171.2.65, into the address bar. If it goes to your ISP, then it is a safe entry.

Also, whenever I log off of Dave's account I recieve the Ending Program window for something called ShellIconHiddenWindow and something else with a similar name - should I be concerned about that?

Not sure without having the whole names of the files. I know that I often get the "ending program" window too and it either closes itself or I click "End Now".

I checked those ISP's the first one "timed out" and the second said it was a bad link so I decided to fix that entry. However I could no longer access the internet so I restored that Item.

Something which is strange is that in the list of recently used programs at my startup there are two things which no one here has accessed they are "tour XP" and "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" I really don't know what that is about but the second one doesn't sound good to me.

I tried that scan for the .msi fix it found like 700 problems and at first glance many of them are just empty registery entries but this program did not fix all problems and I still can not open the Windows Defender file.

On a different account now the homepage for mozilla was changed to google and on all accounts the My Computer Icon doesn't show up on the desktop.

On top of any instructions you may have a description on how to cut down on unnecessary startup programs would be appreciated.

I checked those ISP's the first one "timed out" and the second said it was a bad link so I decided to fix that entry. However I could no longer access the internet so I restored that Item.

Looks like that entry was your ISP.

Something which is strange is that in the list of recently used programs at my startup there are two things which no one here has accessed they are "tour XP" and "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" I really don't know what that is about but the second one doesn't sound good to me.

The “Files and Settings Transfer Wizard” is used to transfer files from another computer to the one you are using. To remove it, right click on it and select “remove from this list”. The Tour XP can be removed from the list the same way. Right now, I have both on my Start menu; I just haven't taken the time to remove them from the list.

I tried that scan for the .msi fix it found like 700 problems and at first glance many of them are just empty registery entries but this program did not fix all problems and I still can not open the Windows Defender file.

Uninstall Windows Defender using Add or Remove Programs. Please download Windows Defender it again from the Internet. Reinstall using the instructions given in the previous post. If this does not correct the problem, I will do some more research. Usually, uninstalling, downloading and reinstalling the program will correct the problem. Sometimes, you get a corrupted download.

On a different account now the homepage for mozilla was changed to google and on all accounts the My Computer Icon doesn't show up on the desktop.

Change the homepage back to whatever you choose. I don't see any sign of a hijacker so I am not sure what changed it. It is easy to change it back by selecting your homepage and then using Tools > Options > Main > Homepage > Use current page.
To get the My Computer Icon back on your desktop:
  • Go to Start > My Computer.
  • Right click on My Computer.
  • A menu will open. Select Show on Desktop.

n top of any instructions you may have a description on how to cut down on unnecessary startup programs would be appreciated.

Step 1

Please disconnect from the Internet. Please close ALL browser windows (including this one).

Step 2

Make sure that Spybot - Search and Destroy TeaTimer is still disabled.

Step 3

Please run HijackThis and click Scan Place checks next to the following entries (make sure not to miss any):

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)

Step 4

Remove programs from your startup. These programs are not required to start automatically as you can start them manually if you need them.

Dell's MyWay process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. Although not technically malware, it is thought to be bad by many experts and it will bring malware with it. For more information see Home Page and/or Speedbar? and My Way Uninstaller.
  • Download and install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
  • Install the program, then start it.
  • Scroll down the list and click My Way Search Assistant entry.
  • Click the Remove button.
MyWay is a Browser Helper Object (BHO) for the MyWay Search Assistant / SpeedBar which has been installed on most newer DELL machines. Some people claim it is spyware; others insist it is not. You can read the Official information From Dell (and you can do a web-search to find more or alternative views).

If, after researching the matter, you decide you want to remove it, see Dell's Instruction For Removing MyWay.
There are safer alternatives available such as the Google toolbar. If you do not use this, I recommend that you remove it. Please follow the Removal instructions. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

I tried that scan for the .msi fix it found like 700 problems and at first glance many of them are just empty registery entries but this program did not fix all problems and I still can not open the Windows Defender file.

Uninstall Windows Defender using Add or Remove Programs. Please download Windows Defender it again from the Internet. Reinstall using the instructions given in the previous post. If this does not correct the problem, I will do some more research. Usually, uninstalling, downloading and reinstalling the program will correct the problem. Sometimes, you get a corrupted download.

I attempted to follow your instructions. However, I never was able to install Windows Defender - so as expected it did not appear on the Add/Remove window. I went through the steps to download again. Validation was completed without problems, I then downloaded the installation file. However the same ".msi" folder to install Windows Defender could not be read.

Also, Thanks for the instructions on the startup cleanups. Here is the new Hijackthis (after Restart).
