many problems:
cannot change/keep desktop wallpaper
"limited or no connectivity" on network (got an IP address but no DNS or gateway) - so no internet capability
pop-ups that when closed (with 'No' message), immediately open IE 6

originally:
on startup IE 6 home page tries to change to "file//c:/windows/homepage.html"
couldn't use TaskMan

I used Zaaman's Retailiator to block the home page update and get back TaskMan function.
Ran AdAware to remove items found.
then created Hijack This log.

Hijack This log below:

Hello mj dude,

1. Please download LSPFix from here: http://www.cexx.org/LSPFix.exe
2. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
3. Check the I know what I'm doing box.
4. In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of webhdll.dll.
5. Select every instance of webhdll.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
6. When you are done click Finish>>.

Before we start, you need to realize that you are missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.

This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.

You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer.

I recommend you download the free

Avast or
AntiVir or
AVG antivirus

Products from all three vendors received the Virus Bulletin's VB100% award and certification for virus detection from ICSA Labs.

Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

After you run the antivirus, then post a fresh Hijackthis log.
