Firstly, sorry I do not know the actual name of the infection. If there is a way I can find this out for you, please tell me. My computer is not very slow yet, but I know I have something because when I do a Google search, and click a link, my browser opens a new window which goes to "hrena.com", then several other websites I don't want, these change each time. It might do this twice, before clicking the link takes me to the desired page. I run F-Secure spyware check, it finds spyware, it is called "Adware.BHO (generic)", and it gets quarantined. Then if I run F-Secure again two minutes later it finds it again, so I now have four quarantined versions of this. F-Secure doesn't find anything with a virus check though.

When I first got this laptop in 2006, I got rid of Norton because the version that came was only a trial version, and installed F-Secure instead at the suggestion of my university.

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of the lines listed below. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

You are running an older version of Java. This can be a security risk so let's get you the latest version.
Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Please post a new hijackthis log.
How is your computer behaving now?

I told HijackThis to fix all the files you said at once, only one went, the other two are still there.
I ran F-Secure spyware a couple more times, the first time found a tracking cookie, but now it's clean. My computer's running as fine as it ever was, the adverts no longer open up on a Google search.

It has switched off Automatic Updates and switched on Windows Firewall.

Open Notepad, and copy everything in the code box below and paste it into a new notepad file. Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixme.reg on your Desktop. Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{1EBF5CC3-BEC7-4B1D-95E9-FE3943E326B2}

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\wtrwcuzg]
Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

Reboot your computer and check your hijackthis log for those lines.
Let me know if they are still present.

I copied the code and saved the file, then it asked me if I wanted to add the information to the registry, I clicked yes and rebooted, but the lines still appeared on HijackThis.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

You may not find the second one now, but try fixing these lines again.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1EBF5CC3-BEC7-4B1D-95E9-FE3943E326B2} - c:\windows\system32\cmcfg32t.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: wtrwcuzg - cmcfg32t.dll (file missing)

Reboot and they should be gone this time.
Let me know.

I didn't find the O20 one this time, but the 02 - BHO (no name) was still there, and HijackThis didn't remove it.
