I recently acquired a corporate refurb laptop (IBM Thinkpad T43) and am having a couple difficulties.

1.) I cannot create/alter hardware profiles (the only one present is Unocked and all the options are grayed out)
I would like to have separate prifiles for docked and undocked states to control performance and battery usage.

2.) When I attach my VGA monitor to the dock, I can get dual displays, but I want to use the VGA as the primary and the laptop display as secondary (have been able to do this with Dell and HP laptops before... is this an IBM thing?)
The display settings are locked to use the laptop display as the primary and the option for use as primary is grayed out on both displays.

I do not have an extra XP license available, so I can't really wipe the machine (it's a licensed and legit OS, I just don't have the install disk as the machine didn't come with one)

These issues are present when running as the Local Administrator.

Can anyone help?

Chewy

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

yep... it updates just fine. I pulled down all the criticals and security updates as well as all of my current drivers.

I'm wondering if it's some gp remnant or something that has these settings locked.

thx. I'll check it out.

Ok, here's the scoop...

I was originally docking the machine into an IBM Port Replicator II (sorry I forgot to mention that).

For whatever reason, the laptop doesn't recognize this as a dock. Therefore, it auto-defaults to the laptop's onboard display as primary. Also, since it wasn't recognizing the PR as a dock, my hardware profile was always showing an undocked state. A buddy (who has a T42) brought over his spare dock (a real dock, not a PR). Hooked it up, plugged it in, and BAM!!! instant recognition, my profile switched properly to a docked state, and I can choose which display to use as primary.

Thx for the effort Chewy.

Bottom line is, now I gotta find out if there's some sort of software out there to make my laptop recognize my PR, or I'll have to buy this dock off my buddy.
