Hi,

I have a couple of stubborn infections that I cannot seem to get rid of. I am running AVG Pro, which detects and quarantines them, but they keep coming back. I also run Spybot S&D, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and I have tried Symantec's FixVundo fix, which didn't work. All my definitions are current, I've cleaned out caches and cookies and defragged. I'm out of options and could use your expertise. Here are my logs:

Hello Robinb,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea

Hi Tea,

Thanks for the really quick response. Unfortunately, combofix hung up on my computer (no, I didn't click anything while it was running). It was at the reboot stage and said please wait, so I waited and waited (2 hours of waiting). It's deader than a doornail.

I have a data recovery guy coming out to see what he can salvage.

Thanks for the try, though.

Robin

Hello,

Before you do that, do you have your XP disk? If so, you might be able to do this yourself and save a heap of money.

tea

Hi Tea,

I do, but let me tell you what I did already. I have a support agreement with Gateway and I spent a about an hour with them trying to get XP to boot up, but I couldn't even get it to boot in Safe Mode. This is my work computer and I have a Raid 1 disk on there, and they told me that I needed to reformat and reload XP in order to get it to work. I need to get as much info off that Raid drive before I do that as I can, so I'm hoping the data recovery guy can do that for me. I don't know if there's really anything else we can do at this point.

In your opinion, do you think we have a chance without reformatting?

Thanks.

If you have your XP disk, you should be able to get to Recovery Console and be able to boot back up without loss of your data.

I'm game.

I have the disc. Worse that can happen is the data recovery guy still has to come out.

Thanks!

Tea,

Would it be ok with you if we took this on tomorrow? I don't know how long it will take, and I just noticed it's almost quitting time here and this truly has given me a migraine. If you want to try tonight, I'll stay. Please advise.

Thanks.

I'm guessing you're in Texas  . I'm in Chicago, so we have a little time difference. I'll post when I get in tomorrow morning and just monitor and watch for you.

You're a treasure. Thanks again

I'm not sure what time I'll be here in the morning, but yes, I guess that puts me an hour behind you.

Hope you feel better!

Good morning....well, it will be for you when you get this! I thought I'd go ahead and post this for you, since I'm not sure when I'll be on in the morning.

If you cannot start your computer, you can run the Recovery Console from the Microsoft Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM. This article describes how to perform this task.

After Windows XP is installed on your computer, to start the computer and use the Recovery Console you require the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM.

=====================

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1. Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5. At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.

For a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

For information about a specific command, type help commandname at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
6. To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

See you when I get here.

Hi Tea,

I won't be at work today, as my sister had a heart attack last night. (She's ok). I will try to tackle this when I get back to work. Thanks for posting it.
