Hi. I've been getting a win32.autorun.aiv trojan hiding in my HP printer software HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Pml Driver HPZ12, which is only being picked up by spybot S&D (but not by SuperAnti-Spyware or McAfee, all of which are up-to-date). Unfortunately, the win32.autorun.aiv doesn't seem to want to be removed because every time I use spybot to fix the problem, it comes back after a restart. I've tried to scan in safe mode but then spybot nor SuperAS or McAfee can pick it up. Is this a false positive or a very devious trojan? Thanks in advance. The log is as follows:

Hello Nabes,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Are you having any other problems, like popups, redirects......anything strange?

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Thanks for replying so fast. I can't seem to get Malwarebytes to work and keep getting a runtime error 372. The message says that COMCLT.OCX control won't load.

EDIT: OK, I got it to load now (needed a VB6 update).

OK, I did the scan, but it found nothing. The main difference that I can tell is that the computer is taking longer to shut down (Saving Your Settings shutdown screen takes about twice as long as before). Other than that there doesn't seem to be much difference in performance.

On a side note, I ran spybot earlier and told it to fix the win32.autorun.aiv trojan. I noticed that the process

O23 - Service: Pml Driver HPZ12 - HP - C:\WINDOWS\system32\HPZipm12.exe

Which was in a hijackthis report before the fix was gone after the fix. Hope that this helps a bit.

Hello there,

Did you use Norton at one time? There are entries there, but I don't know if you're still trying to use it, or maybe just using Ghost.

Let's see if this speeds you up a bit :

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O4 - Global Startup: AOL 9.0 Tray Icon.lnk = C:\Program Files\AOL 9.0\aoltray.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer.

Please let me know about Norton, and how it's running now.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I did have Norton AV (trial version) but I switched it over to McAfee since my university was providing it for free with unlimited free updates. As for the speed (after I've removed the suggested files, apart from 'Acer Empowering Technology.lnk = ?' which is a toolbar that I sometimes need on startup) there's not much of a difference that I can tell (start-up slightly faster) but shutting down still seemed a bit laboured. I don't think that's going to be a problem though.

Have you found anything that may indicate how win32.autorun.aiv may be removed?

That has to be a false positive, as I haven't seen any indication of it in any of the logs you've posted for me.

This might make a difference for you:

The Norton uninstall tool uninstalls ALL Norton 2004/2005/2006/2007/2008 products from your computer. It also uninstalls Norton Ghost 10.0/9.0/2003. http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039

Thank you very much for helping me. I'll tell spybot to ignore that file from now on. Cheers!

You're welcome......but go ahead and run that tool and see if afterwards it makes a bit of difference.

Also, please do this and see if you stop getting the messages :

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Thanks,
tea

The Norton uninstall tool seems to freeze at the "Processing MSI..." bit at around 70%. It's done that about 3 times that I've tried. I think that most of the Norton stuff has been deleted and what's left may not be affecting my computer too much, it's not really a problem.

I've done that and it didn't help as Spybot still picks it up. I've told Spybot to exclude the detection of the PML driver from future scans and it stopped the scans.

Thanks for the link. I may just leave it as it is since I'm still relatively unfamiliar with the current printer and it's functions. I haven't really had the trouble that the topic creator had so I'm gonna wait and see what happens before I deal with the utility.

Mainly I wanted you to see that it isn't malicious. Malware is my forte, and I'm not familiar enough with those functions to muddle through the troubleshooting. You can post over there as well and see if there is anything you can do about it that way.
