I bought an external enclosure. You can put any compatible drive in it you want
Portability? Well. it's not going to fit in your back pocket
Productivity? Don't have a clue as to what you mean

I forgot, you can get a laptop hard drive and enclosure and it will fit in you pocket. I got a Coolmax enclosure and a 160g laptop drive from www.newegg.com

Well, as far as price goes, take a look at your favourite online discount retailer. Prices are dropping all the time for external disks, so it should be easy to pick up a good deal.

As for portability, most external hard disks that are marketed as 'portable' are about the same size, as the physical size of the drive inside them is fixed. Sure, you can get some smaller, 'ultra portable' disks, but it'll cost ya.

By productivity, I;m assuming you mean you want one that is big and fast. Size requirements depend on what you want to use it for, but I'd go for 500Gb+, as they are pretty cheap right now. For speed, go for one with a disk that spins at 7,200rpm. You'll be able to save a few bucks if you go for a slightly slower 5,400rpm model.

Really, there's not that much difference between external hard drives - all you're buying is a disc and an enclosure. You can't really go wrong if you go for the cheapest one that is big enough for your needs.
