About a week ago, my computer got infected with a virus/trojan of some kind. I think it originally came from a facebook image file I was attempting to open. Over the past week, my computer has been running slower and slower and my internet has ground almost to a halt, especially when using a web browser. In addition, when I start the computer, it displays an alert message that says, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcApnLe.dll is not a valid image file." I've tried using both VundoFix and VirtumundoBeGone. VundoFix did almost nothing, but I think VirtumundoBeGone helped out the speed of the machine quite a bit. But unfortunately I am still getting that same alert message, leading me to believe the root of the problem still exists. I was hoping someone could help me figure out the problem and how to fix it. Thanks! These are my two HijackThis logs:

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

I ran into an issue when trying to delete ComboFix/reset my settings. When I type "ComboFix /u" into the Run prompt, it gives me the standard, "Windows cannot find ComboFix" message. I think the machine has deleted the ComboFix program for me, but has not reset my settings. This doesn't exactly surprise me, as the machine actually deleted ComboFix once before. That happened before I even had a chance to run the program the first time, even when I had all of my virus scanners/firewalls/etc disabled. I downloaded it again and successfully ran it, but soon after, the icon disappeared from my desktop again. I'm not sure what's going on here, but I've searched for ComboFix on my machine, and the program itself appears to be gone. So, what should I do? Is there some other way I can reset my settings, etc.?

Here is the delete.bat file:

Deleting files
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\sulmhwhj.ini" deleted
"C:\WINDOWS\BMafaad979.xml" deleted

If the icon is gone, then it means that Combofix was uninstalled properly.

What settings do you want to restore? Are your clock settings OK?

The clock is correct, but I still have file extensions and hidden icons showing, and I would rather have both of those be hidden again. If those are the only other settings that ComboFix changes, than I suppose that's all I need to change.

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.
