Hi,

A few suspicious things have happened to my pc lately. The main thing is

When I log on a service called update.exe keeps opening and closing for the first ten minutes, using up 50-80% of CPU.
When I close it always says 'click here to install important updates' . These two points may be linked.

Needless to say, I have not attempted to install anything to invoke these two operations. Your help would be most appreciated.

I have followed the steps and ran dss.exe and got the two note pad logs but then decided to rerun it as I was not sure if I had done it right. I ran ok but this time only gave me the hijackthis log. Is this enough or shall I try again?

Thanks, Paul

Please download Combofix and save to your desktop:Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop
Close any open browsers.
Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the contents of the C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running.
That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

The logs indicate an infection that is capable of infecting USB memory devices. If you have a USB storage device that you attach to this PC then it is probably infected as well. So refrain from using it untill we are finished cleaning your PC

1. Open NotePad (not wordpad). Copy and paste the following into Notepad (do not include the word code)
File::
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At1.job
C:\WINDOWS\system32\VqC1MtKU.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At10.job
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\At11.job

You are most welcome.

Run an online virus scan called Kaspersky from HERE.1. Click on "Kaspersky Online Scanner"
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
3. Now Kaspersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on "Next"->>"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on "My Computer". And the scan will start.
6. When the scan is complete Select "Save error report as"
Then in the file name just type in kaspersky
Under "save as type" select text .txt
Save it to your Desktop.
Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan

1. *NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders. If you have anything in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner!

Download CCleaner from here to clean temp files from your computer.
  • Double click on the file to start the installation of the program.
  • Select your language and click OK, then next.
  • Read the license agreement and click I Agree.
  • Click next to use the default install location. Click Install then finish to complete installation.
  • Double click the CCleaner shortcut on the desktop to start the program.
  • On the "Windows" tab, under "Internet Explorer," uncheck "Cookies" if you do not want them deleted. (If deleted, you will likely need to reenter your passwords at all sites where a cookie is used to recognize you when you visit).
  • If you use either the Firefox or Mozilla browsers, the box to uncheck for "Cookies" is on the Applications tab, under Firefox/Mozilla.
  • Click on the "Options" icon at the left side of the window, then click on "Advanced."
deselect "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours."
  • Click on the "Cleaner" icon on the left side of the window, then click Run Cleaner to run the program.
  • Caution: It is not recommended that you use the "Issues" feature unless you are very familiar with the registry as it has been known to find legitimate items.
  • After CCleaner has completed its process, click Exit.
2. You need to Empty the Deleted items folder in Outlook Express mailbox.

3. Using Windows Explorer(Right click on "Start," select "Explore," and you will see the "tree' of file folders in the left side of the window. Click on the "+" next to any folder name to expand its contents)
Locate and Delete the following fileC:\Documents and Settings\Abigail\Desktop\Download programs.exe
Close Windows Exporer ->> Reboot your PC ->> Rerun Hijackthis and post a fresh Hijackthis log

And in your reply, give me an updat on how your PC is running now.

Hi bamajim, here is my latest HijackThis log. I still get the 'click here without installing updates' message on my log-off pop-up every time. I have been clicking that rather than installing the updates but is that the right thing to do or should I let the update install? If not, what should I do about it? Thanks, Paul

Those are MS updates and yes you should install them. Once done, Reboot and let me see one more fresh Hijackthis log

Bamajim, I followed your instruction and here is the log. I ran HijackThis soon after logging on, while the Update.exe process was still clicking in and out. Just incase that was not a good idea, I ran it again once this process had settled down. There are thus two scan results below. Regards, Rhodes.

Hi Bamajim,

Since I posted the scans things have taken a serious turn for the worse. While using my computer the screen suddenly changes to what looks like large print unreadable excripted text in blue on a balck background. The only thing I can do is press the reset button. This has happened three times.

Heeeeelllpppppp!

Hi Bamajim,

It has just happened again. I can not say for certain what I was doing when it occurred in the past, but I can say for certain this time.

I sell sports memorabillia and old railway tickets on eBay. I was going through a lot of recent emails using Outlook Express, mainly deleting them or moving them to a different folder. Just before it crashed I clicked on a 'reply' button in an email from ebay on behalf of someone asking a question about one of the things I was selling. This was not a spoof email. It brough up IE but I seem to be having problems with my cable broadband at the moment as it is very slow and frequently I need to reboot the cable modem. Rather than wait I returned to OEx and continued deleting/moving emails in my Inbox. It was at this moment I got the black screen with blue 'fax' like symbols.

Here is a new HijackThis scan. regards, Rhodes

Do you use a proxy server?

Rerun HijackthisAt the main window Select "Open the Misc tool section"
Then Select "Open ADS Spy"
Uncheck "Quick scan" Then Scan
If a log shows up in the window Select "Save log" and post
it as a reply to this thread
