Here's what I've done in sequence:

-SDFix
-Smitfraudfix
-SuperAntiSpyware
-RogueRemover
-sfc /scannow

Something is still whacky.

-I cannot change desktop settings, I receive "Applying Visual Style Error: The visual styles could not be applied."

-When I think I've changed the Customized settings to show My Computer and My Documents on the desktop, after applying and entering OK, neither icons
are placed on the desk top

-I cannot change my home page.

-When I launch IE it goes to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx.
-The home page stays at http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir.dll?p...6.0&ar=home

-It does not apply any changes to IE such as showing the menu bar.

-When I try to:

-download other fix options
-run windows update

I repeatedly get the install activeX message and nothing runs or downloads.

-McAfee is not automatically running and even when I do launch the application and the icon shows on the toolbar, Windows tells me my virus protection is
turned off.

Things just don't seem right.

Sincerely,

Frustrated sonavabeech

check out the posting from April 17th if you're not working from those instructions already. It took me a few hours, but once I figured out the instructions (I'm not much of a computer person) it found and fixed the problems (hopefully for good).

are you suggesting that the OP follows instruction for someone else on another thread? do you think this is really adviseable as those instructions will be for that member and NOT for this one; also (Mod )boopme has already given instructions on 'management' of this problem on this thread

Thanks for the welcome, input and responses. After taking 3 years off of my life and 2 days of off and on working with this issue while at work, school and home, I gave up, backed up some files, and reinstalled the operating system. (...Wonders if she should have done this to begin with...) I have also cut off one of my husband's fingers and told him that I would cut off another if he monkeysup his laptop again  . Just kidding of course.

Now my next problem..........

Where can I purchase replacement inverter and backlight parts? I will find the appropriate forum topic to repost.
