Hi all, first post here. I thought I was pretty good about keeping my computer clean and running smoothly (AVG, ZA, CCleaner, defrag, removing unused programs, trimming my startup list from time to time, etc...). Over the past month or so, occasionally when I resume from hibernation I get a RPC termination window and have 50 seconds or something to shut down. This was tolerable as it was intermittent, and only seemed to happen when i hibernated with a large number of programs running. I searched around and found that the blaster worm sometimes caused an RPC isssue, so i downloaded and installed the blaster tool, to no avail.

Now I'm experiencing episodes of 100% cpu usage (with no obvious culprit in task manager) and sluggish performance on a pretty fast computer running xp. These episodes happen every couple of hours, and i usually have to restart to get my computer back.

I just today was looking through all my svchost.exe processes and noticed one was using 126,000 k of memory...I decided to try and force it to close and managed to induce the RPC error that I get from time to time.

Here's the log from DSS, extra.txt first:

HI

Your logs are clean, I could get you to run more scans, but I don't think your problem is malware related ...

I did see this in your log :-

-- System Event Log --

Event Record #/Type10312 / Error
Event Submitted/Written: 04/23/2008 07:16:45 PM
Event ID/Source: 7031 / Service Control Manager
Event Description:
The Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 60000 milliseconds: Reboot the machine.

I'm not sure I can help with this, but as you have been waiting for nearly 3 weeks & may not have your problem resolved, I may be able to give some guidance ...

You may have a conflict of files, or out of date files somewhere causing this ... all I could find about this error, referred to win2000 and installing the latest service pack ... do you have all the latest updates from windows update ?

Remember these links are for win2000, not XP, but they may point you in the right direction ...

These from your dss log are also relevant to your problem :-

------
The following wont resolve the issue, but it may help you live with it

Go to Start > run > type services.msc

The services applet opens

Scroll down to Remote Procedure Call (RPC) ... NOT Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

Double click Remote Procedure Call (RPC)

click the Recovery tab

Change the first failure from restart the computer to restart the service

Change the second failure from restart the computer to restart the service

Leave the subsequent failures as restart the computer ... so that you don't get stuck in a loop ...
