Hi,

I recently experienced some problems with my IE browser. Everytime I open a link in Yahoo or Google, i get redirected to a different page. I have run avg, adaware, and spy bot S & D but the problem still remains. Both AVG and Adaware find no viruses and Spybot claims to have fixed and removed the Zlob dns trojan. Sometimes, I get a pop-up message that task manager claims is from crss.exe stating that I have registry problems and I should visit a webpage called registryfix.com or something similar. I also discovered that the radio dialog button for "show all hidden files and folders" is missing in the folder options menu. Furthermore, AVG states that windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts has a status change. Windows explorer also periodically shuts down due to an unexpected error and everytime I insert my flashdrive into the USB port, my desktop shutsdown and restarts...

I ran Hijackthis and discovered 2 log entries that I don't recognize and I suspect they may be part of the problem but since i am not a computer expert, i am afraid to make any changes

Can you please help me with this dilemma. Your help is greatly appreciated. Below is the Dekkard Log Scan for your perusal.

Thank you for your time.

Hello korniceman3000,

NOTE: If you have downloaded SmitfraudFix previously please delete that version and download it again! Also delete C:\rapport.txt

Please download SmitfraudFix

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart anyway into normal Windows. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of the SmitfraudFix report into your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Hi Sifu Mike,

Thank you for your response. Your help is greatly appreciated  I have carried out the procedures as you have instructed and have enclosed the Smitfraud and HiJackThis logs for your inspection. The copy of Rapport is in the attachment section because it was too long to post and the forum wouldn't allow it. So far, my browser has still re-directed me to different pages from the specified link but if I quickly go back before the page changes, the next time I open the link, it takes me to the actual site...

I can't seem to upload the Rapport file because the forum claims my attachment is larger than the available space even though it is only 232k. Please advise...

Hi korniceman3000,

At the top of the screen, Go to My Controls >
Options > Manage Your Attachments and delete all your previous Attachments.

Now that is is empty you should be able to save the SmitfruadFix report as an attachment.

If you edit out the hosts portion of the SmitfraudFix report, then you can either post it or attach it.

Hello korniceman3000,

For some reason, SmitfraudFix did not work. Did you have Teatimer enable while SmitfraudFix run?

We will try a different tool.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running.
While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

-- If this error message is displayed when running SDFix: "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue..."
Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\FixPath.exe /Q
Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.
%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe

Hi SifuMike,

Thank you so much for your quick response! It seems SDFix has removed quite a number of backdoor trojan files from my computer  but this ZlobDNSChanger is a lot more deeply rooted than I thought. On connecting my dsl, I've realized that there is no longer a long stall and sudden increase in CPU usage which is a good sign but I still get redirected when I open links in my IE browser... How do they come up with viruses like these...

Listed below is the SDFix report. The Hijack this log is on the following post.

Hello korniceman3000,

Please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Beginners Guide to CCleaner

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer,

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log and tell me how your computer is running.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi SifuMike,

Thank you for your prompt response. Sorry about the delay. I was away from the computer for a while. Both programs definitely helped my browser run a lot smoother than before but I still keep getting redirected. I've checked the add/remove software of my computer for unwanted programs but nothing new was installed aside from the antimalware you provided.

Every time I click a link in Yahoo it starts searching then goes to a blank page to an address for results.yahoo.com while the status bar shows the page being re-directed to allofweb.net and brings me to some webpage like search11.info.com. When I try to go back, it refuses and the status bar revaals http://info.intelli-direct.com.

Furthermore, the moment the mouse pointer passes over the listed yahoo search results in IE, a very light brownish tan box envelopes the entire entry. Even touching the letters in the text description causes the browser to be re-directed.

Below is my MBAM report and HijackThis Log for your review. I apologize for this being such a lengthy problem and really appreciate all the help and assistance you've provided. I didn't think this DNSchanger would be so difficult to remove.

Hello korniceman3000,

This computer is really infected, so we will have to use several tools.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it.
Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
If your firewall gives an alert, (because this tool will download an additional file from the internet), please don't let your firewall block it, but allow it instead.

You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts.

If your system does not reboot, then reboot it manually.

Please boot into Normal Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{F73FC8B1-86DB-4C6C-8FCF-56634923D76B}: NameServer = 85.255.114.68 85.255.112.69

Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed.

* Go to Control Panel. - If you are using Windows XP's Category View, select the Network and Internet Connections category. If you are in Classic View, go to the next step.

Double-click the Network Connections icon
Right-click the Local Area Connection icon and select Properties.
Higlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the Properties button.
Be sure Obtain DNS server address automatically is selected.
OK your way out.

* Go to Start > Run and type in cmd
Click OK.
This will open a command prompt.
Type or copy and paste the following line in the command window:

ipconfig /flushdns

Hit Enter.
Exit the command window.

Reboot your computer again.

Please post the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt, along with a new HijackThis log.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hi SifuMike,

Thank you for your response. After looking through the HijackThis log, I can't find anything that I don't recognize from before the virus infection. However, I still can't seem to remove the DNSChanger. Fixware removed the Tcipip redirection and after a run through with HijackThis,

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{F73FC8B1-86DB-4C6C-8FCF-56634923D76B}: NameServer = 85.255.114.68 85.255.112.69

was removed but shortly after restarting the computer and connecting to the internet, Peerguardian stopped IE from going to any webpage because Malware was trying to enter the computer.

Range: Malware exploits Source:66.32.111.31:3025 Destination: 85.255.112.69:53 Protocol: UDP

Please advise on my next step. Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience.

I still can't seem to remove the DNSChanger.

Where are you seeing DNSChanger? I dont see it in your log.

but shortly after restarting the computer and connecting to the internet, Peerguardian stopped IE from going to any webpage because Malware was trying to enter the computer.

Range: Malware exploits Source:66.32.111.31:3025 Destination: 85.255.112.69:53 Protocol: UDP

Is not that the purpose of PeerGuardian? It acts like similar to a firewall preventing incoming and outgoing packets.

Are you using a commerical firewall?

Your log looks clean.

Hi SifuMike,

Thank you so much for the quick response. The DNS changer never shows in any of the logs of the malware removal programs used thus far. They only appear in my Spybot S & D Fixed Logs. Everyday, Spybot cleans my computer at 3 AM in the morning and everyday it says it removed both Zlob DNSChanger and Right Media but both keep reappearing in the logs. I just performed a new HijackThis scan and the log reveals

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{F73FC8B1-86DB-4C6C-8FCF-56634923D76B}: NameServer = 85.255.114.68 85.255.112.69

again.

To answer your quetsion about peerguardian: Yes I do use it as my primary firewall in place of my Black Ice defender which ran really slowly and used a lot of my RAM. It was blocking the malware from re-entering the computer but at the same time, prevented me from opening any webpage because every webpage I inputed in the address bar or via ctr+L was being re-directed and peerguardian managed to stop this but at the cost of IE functioning at all regardless of what website I entered.

After restarting my computer, the DNS changer was dormant but then re-activated once I started searching on Yahoo via both IE and Firefox. I tried to click on a Yahoo search return for a WWE link and the page was re-directed to quicklex.com. Listed below is my most recent HijackThis log from 20 minutes ago. I have also enclosed the most recent copy of the Spybot S & D Fix logs for your review.

Thank you again and sorry about this mess.

Hi,

To answer your quetsion about peerguardian: Yes I do use it as my primary firewall in place of my Black Ice defender which ran really slowly and used a lot of my RAM.

PeerGuardian is a small firewall made for p2p users. I would not use it as my main firewall.

Here are five free firewalls available for personal use. If one conflicts with your system, try another.

Spybot cleans my computer at 3 AM in the morning and everyday it says it removed both Zlob DNSChanger and Right Media but both keep reappearing in the logs.
Zlob.DNSChanger: [SBI $041D1396] TCP/IP Settings #1 (Undefined) (Registry change, fixed)

Sounds like you are being reinfected in the middle of the night.

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{F73FC8B1-86DB-4C6C-8FCF-56634923D76B}: NameServer = 85.255.114.68 85.255.112.69 again.

That is Wareout redirection, cause by visiting certain web sites. What web sites were you visiting when you got this infection?

Another possiblilty is that your Emule and/or BitTorrent P2P is the cause. Are you leaving them active and letting others access your computer? That is asking for trouble!

I see you are running P2P programs eMule BitTorrent on Startup. This is a very bad idea, as it give others access to your computer. Disable them both from running at startup.

Any peer-to-peer file swapping program, such as Audiogalaxy, Bearshare, BitTorrent, Blubster, E-Mule, Gnucleus, Grokster, Imesh, KaZaa, KaZaa Lite, Limewire, Morpheus, Shareaza, WinMX and Xolox can degrade system performance and consume vast amounts of storage and may create security issues as outsiders are granted access to internal files.

They are often bundled with adware or spyware. Recently, peer-to-peer file swapping programs have been used for identity theft.
