Formatting Xp Sp 2 Drive

I have a xp professional sp 2 computer,I want to format c: drive so I put my xp installation cd in,reboot the computer and it asks me if I want to boot from cd,so I do press any key and it says that the setup is doing something and then the screen goes black and I can hear the cd stop spinning and that's it! What's the problem?Please help!
p.s.does it matter if my xp installation cd is only sp1?

You say that you want to format C:, so I assume that you intend to do a clean install.

Have you checked the boot order in the BIOS, making sure that the CD is the first option?

My interpretation of what you wrote...is that the CD cannot read the XP CD. Did you take it out and check it for scratches, smudges, foreign matter? You can always try to clean it by just running a little water on it and drying it with vertical/horizontal (not circular) strokes with a soft dry cotton cloth.

And...you CD lens could be dirty.

Does this CD drive have problems reading other disks?
