I hope that someone out there can help me. I am a total computer novice. I can do emails, look up things on the web but that's it. My computer seems to be so slow as the moment if I sign in to anything it takes nearly 5 minutes to do anything.
I've made a list of all the programmes I've got. Can anyone tell me should I delete any of these.
Set Program Access and Defaults
Windows Catologue
Windows Update
New Office Document
Winzip
Accessories
Games
Powertoys for Windows XP
Start Up
Winamp
WinRAR
Internet Explorer
Outlook Express
Remote Assistance
Windows Media Player
Wireless USB Utitlity
Microsoft Office
Windows Media Bonus Pack for Windows XP
Nero
Windows Live Messenger
Winzip
Acrobat Reader 5.0
Lexmart 640 Series
Mozilla Firefox
Vimcro USB Pc Camera
Real
Real Player
AVG 7.5
Lavasoft
Lavasoft Ad-Adware SE Personal
Limewire
Downloads Porgrams
Games
Translator
Videos
Fast Stone Photo Resizer
Skype
Threatfire
P.C Tools Firewall Plus
CCleaner

That is all the things what I have got on when I press programmes. Are they all necessary. To be trueful I don't know what they all are, apart from MSN and Internet Explorer, and the one where you write letters and Skype and Limewire.
Anyway help on this would be gratefully received

I dunno. You have to go under some of the sub headings like Accessories & Games to see what's actually there. There's some security stuff like CCleaner, AVG, Threatfire & PC Tools Firewall. Some things like Nero may have been pre-installed. That's a video editing program. Have you checked for viruses & spyware?

Well...have you done any maintenance on the system?

XP Chkdsk, Using the Graphical Version (My Computer) - http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html Run chkdsk, following the instructions for the Graphical Version. Put check marks in both options (scan, recover).

After chkdsk has completed and the system has rebooted, run defrag on the drive.

Using Windows Defrag - http://www.geekgirls.com/windows_defrag.htm

As for your programs...I see three that I automatically would remove: Limewire, Real/Real Player, and Windows Messenger.

How much RAM/memory installed?

How much free space on the C: partition?

Some things that might help:
