I'm back.

Fresh load of OS (winxp pro) with SP1, 23 Critical Updates, 10 of 18 other windows updates & 2 driver updates.

upon it, selected apps:
  • ZoneAlarm
  • SpywareBlaster
  • Spy-Bot S&D
  • AVG Free
  • a2 Free
  • AdobeReader 6
  • Mozilla 1.7
  • Firefox
  • Java Runtime...SEv1.4.2_04
  • MaxBlast
many improvements, but some glitchs too.

under several circumstances, browsers can't resolve sites. I'm using some workaround techniques, to access e-mail and get here for instance, but all isn't right.
rather than explain furthor, I've included reports for you, thinking we could go into details of your choosing.

Right after I posted the reports I tried to find a way to describe the problem better,
in case you asked.
Browser Hijack?
Browser Conflict?
Browser Confusion?
Browser Re-Direct?

I connected to nocharge...get it's homepage in IE

close the homepage.

open firefox. bookmark to bleepingcomputers...found

bookmark to yahoo.com...alert msg:it cant be found

close firefox, open mozilla...found

bookmark to (anywhere) nope, "it cant be found"

disconnect nocharge.
reconnect nocharge...autoconnecting,

get the homepage & close it.

open firefox...google quick search...OK

froogle search...it hangs, timesout.

backbutton to homepage, try mozillazine...found

try bleepingcomputers...found.

try General Chat>desktop pictures topic>brunt's desktop...it hangs, finally resolves but to nowhere.

try "good cleaner" from his sig line...cant be found msg

try Test & Scribbles>786>link to bliss...no longer connects

disconnect & reconnect to ISP nocharge, this time cancelling the autoconnect.

by doing this, i can change the password. I'd noticed that when first
setting up, ISP instructs all to use "guest" as user name & "password" as password. But in
the autoconnect box for the password, 15 asterisks appear, not 8. So, I reset the password and

reconnect...close the nocharge homepage, open firefox

bookmark to bleepingcomputers>test & scribbles>789>bliss and it takes me to www.dreamland

no problem

close it, try General chat>desktop pictures>a signature link...nope.

try an ad link...to www.goodservices.com "couldn't be found"

back to Test & Scribbles>789>bliss...nope, not this time. nowhere.

so, I close firefox, reopen and get "resolving host www.mozilla.org..." in the status bar
and alert msg:...couldn't be found"

disconnect & reconnect nocharge.

this time I leave the homepage open, try the google searchbar there, find bleepingcomputers.com
click on it and get to "tutorials", the spy-bot one, try link to Spy-Bot's homepage...
I'm there

try a link to net integration from there and "...can't be found"

Close IE (the homepage) and try to open mozilla or firefox. Can't be done.

That's an example of surfing the net as presently I'm presently able to. Not entirely successfully!

there have been other trials, but you get the point...and can see it in the nocharge log of just before
I posted.

Before & after...there you have it. Much more than you'd prefer to read about one

BLEEPIN'COMFEWTER DAG NABBIT, I'm sure. Sorry. Its runnin' good otherwise, quick bootups

10 second shutdowns and the whole mess of security lockouts is behind me.

Since I left the machine, alas to soak up some much needed sleep, I continued my investigation...

got in to net-integration forum and used the new chat feature (you might consider it as "news" in your forum, as well)

after about an hour of chat and postings, I was told nothing appears particularly out of order, yet some uncertainty remains on both sides of the table...

so I was directed to several links for furthor education and told to post again after I'd done so.

the links include microsoft knowledge base articles, download of MBSASetup-english, security related articles and Gibson Research sites (which I'd been to before and scan revealled I was in full stealth mode regarding ports)

well, today those sites are inaccesssible, (the alert msg:...couldn't be found) and when navigating back to firefox, it too couldn't be found.

So, to get anywhere, I'd have to reconnect the nocharge, go directly to firefox, then here, where I can operate until I close it...then I'll be blocked from even basic sites like google or yahoo. If not blocked, instead of resolving the data transfer, it'll just hang...showing status bar indicator at "nearly complete" but not "done"

the variety of pages I've managed to download, prior to the attempt at Gibson Research is 62 MB, more or less, so I have my work cut out for me plowing through it all.

figuring out the use of the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer will be a challenge, on top of all the rest.

quick scans of the materials indicate that there may be some conflicts with ad-aware and spyblaster that can be resolved, but I need to study more before I can comment with any authority.

BTW, the KB Articles are:
  • 299357
  • 314067
  • 314850
  • 326155
and the others from microsoft are:
  • mbsahome.mspx
  • hosts article
Does this info help you?

Well, I'm reading the KB 326155, regarding the basic "can't find"error msg

it may occur if any one of the following is true:
  • IE connection settings incorrect
  • incorrectly configured,
  • non-functioning,
  • or incompatible firewall or
  • proxy software has been installed
  • Network Adapter is not functioning or
  • you have incompatible network adapter drivers installed
  • Internet Connection Sharing installation is not functioning or
  • not configured correctly
the AOL remarks are not applicable
  • Winsock registry keys are damaged or corrupt
naturally, internet options>tools>connections tab has been checked...

now set at "automatic settings" and no proxy...

(I've read the current posts in the thread "need a good proxy" as well...and am lookin' forward to a tutorial 'bout the matter...)

as I continue, it seems this discussion may appropriately belong in another catagory, as b4...

my device manager lists the Networking Adapter as disabled...something I did because of the constant popup alerting me to "disconnected cable" and I don't use LAN

the NVIDIA drivers factory CD I use at OS reinstall does give me the "microsoft doesn't approve" dialog which I must ignore to proceed.

2 driver updates at Windows Updates are installed whenever I reload

zonealarm doesn't seem to be incompatible with ICF

the zillapopupkiller problem did involve switchingproxies without my doing it

and I don't think the winsock or winsock32 keys are damaged, but who knows?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

trying the command prompt, per info from microsoft
  • hostname
  • nbtstat
  • pathping
  • route
  • tracert
gets me somewhere, but reading the proper syntax and trial/erroring it hasn't given me the results I'm sure could be had. Yet.

(I get the hostname...graycase5, but thats all folks....)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

regards,
phawgg (sorta in a fog, presently)

Are you using ICF with zonealarm currently? If so, disable ICF. You do not need both running and that could be causing a problem.

Have you checked that you are not using a proxy in either of your browser configs?

Try to ping www.jumptheshark.com and then ping 216.213.99.226. When the problem occurs again, try it again.

In your dialup setup are you set to obtain an ip address and dns servers automatically?

If you disable zone alarm do the problems continue happening?

the answers to your questions:
  • yes, I was using both
  • no, I'm not using proxy in either
  • both ping requests "timed out"
  • I'm uncertain of how to determine the answer
  • disabling zonealarm (enabling ICF only) eliminates the problem
(disabling ICF and leaving zonealarm doesn't remedy the problem)

Ok it was what I suspected. It is probably zone alarm. I have had some people with the same problems. SO if you disable zone alarm, your problem is essentially gone?

This all started for some family members and friends when they updated to the latest version of ZA. That may be the problem that you are having and i am not sure how to resolve it. I had them switch to another firewall like kerio free.

yes, disabling ZoneAlarm eliminates the problem

I'm checking on this and the options to it now.

Operating with ICF only for the time being. Good call, with all the variables, and having set the firewall properly by all information I'd read, I wouldn't have placed it high on the priority list of possible reasons for the problems.
