I having an issue with my computer which is causing me extreme grief. There is some process running which continually updates the HKLM Run entries with everchanging dll's. These dll's are created in the System32 folder. Also, Hijackthis will not run unless renamed. I have tried several things but have been unable to rid my computer of this. I have listed the Logs from the Kaspersky online scan and Deckard's System Scanner.

Deckard's System Scanner v20071014.68
Run by pattersoel on 2008-04-20 08:12:02

Event Record #/Type35102 / Warning
Event Submitted/Written: 04/20/2008 01:52:24 AM
Event ID/Source: 11150 / DnsApi
Event Description:
The system failed to register network adapter with settings:

Adapter Name : {1E4B139B-F917-4BC0-B78F-BDC8FED2AAB6}

Host Name : ELPATHOME

Adapter-specific Domain Suffix : gvl.l-3com.com

DNS Server list :

63.246.63.142, 69.60.160.203

Sent update to server : None

IP Address(es) :

192.168.1.102

The cause of this DNS registration failure was because the DNS update
request timed out after being sent to the specified DNS Server. This is
probably because the authoritative DNS server for the name being updated
is not running.

You can manually retry registration of the network
adapter and its settings by typing "ipconfig /registerdns" at the command
prompt. If problems still persist, contact your network systems
administrator to verify network conditions.

Hello there and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.
My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E8F8BD76-9357-4DE1-A441-D660A743A184} - C:\WINNT\system32\xxyywurr.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FB422E7B-3D5E-4D9B-84C2-91B6C888CDE2} - C:\WINNT\system32\pmnmkiji.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BM3b756bba] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINNT\system32\huvclhgd.dll",s
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [38465826] rundll32.exe "C:\WINNT\system32\gwefoguj.dll",b
O16 - DPF: {E5F5D008-DD2C-4D32-977D-1A0ADF03058B} (JuniperSetupSP1 Control) - https://ide2.l-3com.com/dana-cached/setup/J...perSetupSP1.cab
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnmkiji - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\pmnmkiji.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Download KillBox from the following link :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php
Unzip the folder to your desktop.

Start Killbox.exe
Select the "Delete on Reboot" option.
Click on the "All Files" button (!important!),which will then flash green.
Copy the complete text in bold below to the clipboard by highlighting the filepaths and pressing Control + C:

C:\WINNT\system32\xcsDd01\xcsDd011065.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\gwefoguj.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\tyovtyjn.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\huvclhgd.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\Perflib_Perfdata_358.dat
C:\WINNT\system32\rruwyyxx.ini2
C:\WINNT\system32\xxyywurr.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\Perflib_Perfdata_338.dat
C:\WINNT\system32\Perflib_Perfdata_210.dat
C:\WINNT\17PHolmes572.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\pmnmkiji.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\d3d9caps.dat
C:\WINNT\ccccccccccccccccc.dll
C:\info.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\xoobdoc.exe

Open 'file' in the killboxmenu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
You must use the file File menu--pasting by right-clicking the mouse will only enter one file.
Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click "yes".
Click OK at any Pending File Rename Operations prompt, let me know if there appear.
If you don't get that message, reboot manually.
Your computer should reboot now.

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Please find and delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\MalwareAlarm
C:\WINNT\system32\xcsDd01

Reboot back into normal mode.

Open notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quote box into the window:

@echo off
sc stop PSEXESVC
sc delete PSEXESVC

Save this as fix.bat
Choose to save as all files.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick fix.bat and let the program run.
A small black dos window will flash, this is normal.

I want you to clean your cache and cookies from your internet explorer.
There are a few infected files which need to be removed from your system.

° Close all instances of Internet Explorer .
° Go to your control panel and open "Internet Options".
° Click on the "General" tab.
° Click the "Delete Cookies" button, then the "Delete Files" button.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\active setup\installed components\5aadd6d2-dd89-4056-81e2-3ce54e10d1ce]

Save this as "fix.reg" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

I performed all the step listed in your post. When I ran killbox, I got the PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has be removed by an external process message. I had to reboot manually, because nothing happened after the message box displayed. Also, I don't think sc.exe (service control manager) is installed on my PC. I don't have the full NT Reskit installed. I looked in the registry and didn't see an installed service under the name PSEXESVC. I'm listing the new logs below. I still see the entries in the run section for the randomly created dll's as well as more dll files in the system32 folder.

First things first, we need to install the recovery console onto your system; it's an important security and safety feature which you really do need to have installed. You can install the recovery console regardless of whether or not you have the XP cd that came with the operating system - I recommend you download the recovery console installation file from the internet, it's only about 4mb in size, so it shouldn't take too long to download.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
At that page, scroll down and click on the appropriate download for your version of Windows XP (Home or Professional) and the service pack level that you have installed. When you click on the link to download the file, make sure you save it directly to your desktop.

If you are unsure what version of Windows you have and what Service Pack is installed, you can follow these instructions to gain that information:

1) Click on the Start button.
2) Click on the Run menu option.
3) In the Open: field type the following: sysdm.cpl and then click on the OK button.
4) A screen will appear showing information about your installation.
Under the System: category you should see your Windows version and the installed Service Pack.

Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. This is shown in the following image:

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Ok, we won't worry about installing the recovery console for the time being.

Click start > run and type: notepad, then hit enter.
Copy and paste in the following text into the window.

Rootkit::
C:\WINNT\system32\pmnmkiji.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\osdmgkoc.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\nalnaryn.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\khfecbcd.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\cokgmdso.ini
C:\WINNT\system32\Perflib_Perfdata_2a0.dat
C:\WINNT\system32\dcbcefhk.ini2
C:\WINNT\system32\dcbcefhk.ini
C:\WINNT\system32\jugofewg.ini

File::
C:\WINNT\17PHolmes572.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\pmnmkiji.dll
C:\WINNT\ccccccccccccccccc.dll
C:\info.exe

Folder::
C:\TEMP\berDrv11

Click File > Save and call it "CFScript.txt" (without quotes).
Save it to your desktop.
Posted Image
Refering to the picture above, drag CFscript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Combofix will run, and a text file will open. Please post it back here.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02F1ACAD-678B-4EED-B3AA-D0F8AD2C9BEE} - C:\WINNT\system32\khfecbcd.dll
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FB422E7B-3D5E-4D9B-84C2-91B6C888CDE2} - C:\WINNT\system32\pmnmkiji.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [38465826] rundll32.exe "C:\WINNT\system32\osdmgkoc.dll",b
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BM3b756bba] Rundll32.exe "C:\WINNT\system32\nalnaryn.dll",s
O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmnmkiji - C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\pmnmkiji.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Reboot again and post a new Hijackthis log back here.

Download GMER from Here
Right Click the Zip and Select "Extract All"
Double Click gmer.exe to launch the program.

Click on the Rootkit Tab and then click Scan.
It takes a while to run, once complete, copy the results to notepad and save them somewhere safe.
Post those results in the next reply.

I created the file CFScript.txt as specified and when ComboFix tries to run it a message box appears with the text:

Cannot import CFScript.txt: The specified file is not a registry script. You can import only registry files.

If you click OK on the message box, nothing happens. ComboFix just exits. I downloaded a fresh copy of ComboFix with the same results. If I close the message box without clicking OK, ComboFix starts running, but I don't know if it is using the script or not. I will post the log when it has finished.

OK. ComboFix completed and for the first time since this problem began I don't see the dll's, registry entries, or rundll32's in the process list. Popups also seem to have stopped. Looks like progress. The requested logs are posted below.

Good work! Things are looking a lot better already..

Please open notepad and and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\pmnmkiji]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"Authentication Packages"="msv1_0"

Save this as "fix.reg" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
Note that this scanner will only work on Internet Explorer, so please use this browser for the scan.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.

When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

Good work!

Please find and delete these two folders:
C:\!KillBox
C:\QooBox

Also, please find and delete this file:
C:\Documents and Settings\pattersoel\My Documents\Setup.exe

Click Start, then All Programs, then Spybot - Search & Destroy and then Spybot - Search & Destroy.
On the left side, click "Recovery".
Select (place a check) beside ALL the backup files that contain quarantined items.
Click on the Purge Selected Items button.
A dialog will appear, stating that the backup will be removed. Click Yes.
When the Recovery window is empty, Exit Spybot.

We need to purge your infected system restore points.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Check Turn off System Restore, click Apply, and then click OK.
More information on how to disable your system restore can be found here.

We want to create a new, clean restore point. Please first reboot your computer.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Uncheck "Turn off System Restore", click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point - Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup".
Click Create, and after it has created the restore point, click "Close".
Further instructions on creating a restore point can be found here

Please reboot a final time and let me know how the PC is running.
I see a clean Hijackthis log now!

I deleted the requested folders and purge the SSD quarantine. Everything seems to be running normally. Since this is Win2K, I don't have System Restore Points. Everythings looks good to me. Let me know if you need any other info. You have been a great help.

Glad I could help!
The latest log is looking clean!
My apologies for neglecting the fact you're on Win2K, they're quite rare nowadays..
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will be reduced dramatically.

Use an Anti Virus Software -
* It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine.
* This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. This link has listings of stand-alone anti virus programs:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
* I would recommend Grisoft's AVG or AVAST.
* These are the more secure and better ones.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall -
* I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
* Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.
* Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
* For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
* I would recommend ZoneAlarm as a firewall as it's easy to use.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently -
* It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
* This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
* If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly

Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy- Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
* This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
* You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware.
* You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster -
* SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
* A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

If you have any addition questions just ask...
David
