Object Reference Not Set To An Instance Of An Object

What does this mean and how can i fix it. While using my mapping software, i get this message and the page freezes. Then i have to use task manager to end task.

Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application if you click continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. down below that it reads. Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
