WARNING: Expect week long delays between responses concerning logs and such on this system. This is my mother-in-law's computer and I only use it on Saturday-Sunday. Therefore, I plan to post a few extra logs to speed up the process.

I have used Spy-bot and a-squared and did clean out a few things. I did this because the computer is a bit slow at times and every weekend when I arrive there is a new ad-ware program installed. I am guessing she downloads whatever the "ads" say...like...."YOUR INFECTED" so she downloads the junk program which infects her.

LSP-Fix gives me three dll's. mswsock.dll, winrnr.dll, and rsvpsp.dll.
I am going to guess at least one of those needs to go, but I don't know which one.

I believe I Q'd a couple of important files from the windows directory using a-squared. Almost instantly Windows asked for the XP cd to replace the files. Of course as always, I don't have said CD.....I just looked and I can't find the Quarentined files. I don't know if I deleted them or what. The system doesn't seem to need them. A-squared said they were infected.

I'd like to post a combofix log just so you don't have to wait a week for me to post one, but I can't seem to find the download link on these forums. I know combofix is a dangerous instrument. Maybe there's a reason I can't find the download link.

My mother-in-law doesn't know how to burn CD's. She seems to have the full version of Nero on here. She doesn't have enough RAM to run a mass of Nero processes. I have done everything to destroy every instance of Nero short of uninstalling it. In the bottom right corner, there is a nero search bar that I can't get rid of. When I type something and hit enter it opens a nero search window with results or whatever; I click on "options" and it throws and error, probably because the process needed to run the options menu is not running. Whatever the case, if you could find a way to destroy that search bar that would be great. I can't find how to destroy it. SEE ATTACHMENTS for more details.

This computer only has 256MB of RAM. The more juck I can get cleaned the better. My mother-in-law only uses the computer for MSN, online games, and a bit of websurfing. I don't even think she uses email.

I am the only one who uses Firefox and it has stopped loading. I am going to uninstall firefox and reinstall and see if that fixes it. Even if that fixes it, I still need to be sure all the viruses are off of it.

Thanks for the hard work. You guys should get some kind of award.

Hello american.swan

I apologize for the delay in response as we get overwhelmed at times but we are trying our best to keep up.
If you have since resolved the original problem you were having would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Just before we begin, please don't quote any logs as it just makes things easier on the eyes

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.
alternate download site

DSS will do the following:
  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not
    malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
    • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
    • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

Next
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Accept Button

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
