While browsing the web her laptop become infected with something bad, her computer slowed and started freezing, she heard some kind of an audio file playing in the background, then a program called malwarrior started downloading itself. Now its still extremely slow and lagy and it keeps trying to connect to the internet.

She had an expired copy of Norton at the time so that didnt help, I have since installed avast and deleted whatever malwarrior files I could find but the problem persists. So now we have installed HijackThis, run it, and now have a log fro you nice people to read and hopefully help us out of this mess. Thanks in advance for any help :D

Hi jake2k and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

I will be handling your log and helping you to get cleaned up.

Please take note of the following:

1. Please do not make any system changes yet. as any changes you make may well alter your log.
2. The cleaning process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you that your computer is clean.
3. If there's anything that you don't understand, please ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Please give me some time to look over your log and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi jake2k

I have to point out to start with that you have a Backdoor.IRC.Bot on your system.

Backdoor.IRC.Bot is a generic detection for a group of Backdoor Trojan Horses that uses IRC channels to launch Denial of Service (DoS) attacks, and that allows a hacker to control the compromised computer. Some of the actions that a Backdoor.IRC.Bot can perform include:

• Listening on an IRC channel for commands from a remote attacker
• Allowing control of a compromised computer.
• Connecting to an IRC server.
• Allowing access to system information.
• Terminating processes.
• Flooding IRC channels and mailboxes.
• Executing programs, commands and scripts on the compromised computer.
• Uploading or downloading the files to the compromised computer.
• Participating in a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack on a remote host.

Unfortunately we cannot be sure about what they have done.

If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojans have been identified there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS.

For more information read ....Here
If you choose to format and reinstall read...... Here

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy again.

To save you some time, i've included the 1st part of a fix..... incase you want to continue.
But this entirely up to you.

Step 1
Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Step 2
Download SDFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix). DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup [but before the Windows icon appears] press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Finally copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.
Step 3
I need to see an uninstall list:
Open HijackThis... click on Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save..... copy and paste the results in your next post.
More information with a screenshot, can be found here.

In your next reply, please submit: ...Only if you want to continue.
SmitfraudFix report
SDFix report
The uninstall list
and a new Hjt log.

Thanks.

Hi jake2k

We need not worry about running the 2nd part of 'SmitfraudFix', 'SDFix' found the same files and has already removed them.

Step 1
We need to remove some programs from your system.
Click on start... settings... control panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:

Adssite Browser Optimizer... Adware related program
Rightonadz Browser Optimizer... Adware related program
Trafficninja.biz Extension... Adware related program
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11... Old version of Java
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6... Old version of Java

As you have uninstalled 'Norton' these are no longer required
LiveUpdate 3.2 (Symantec Corporation)
LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)

Click on each program in turn and select remove.

Reboot your system when finished.

Step 2
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these items.

Then close all other windows, browers etc--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot your computer to complete the process.

Step 3
Please download ComboFix

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

There are full instructions on how to download and run ComboFix here:
How to use ComboFix
Please follow all the instructions to the letter...(this is very important)

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. This may cause it to stall

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply.

In your next reply, please submit:
ComboFix.txt
and a new Hjt log.

Could you also give me some indication on how things are running now.

Thanks.

Ok well I ran the ComboFix just like it said and it seemed to work but at the end i got a blue screen with some text that disappeared to fast to read anything and then the computer restarted. I tried to run it again and got the same result so I just made a new HJT log.

The computer seems to be back up to speed and it's not trying to connect to the internet anymore, I haven't hooked it up to the net since it was infected. Do you think its safe to connect it yet?

Hi jake2k

I tried to run it again and got the same result

Let's see if ComboFix saved a report:
Have a look here:
C:\ComboFix.txt ( if there's more than one.... send me the report with the lowest number after the .txt)

Do you think its safe to connect it yet?

Let's wait and see what the report shows. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Try running 'ComboFix' in 'safe mode' ... see if that helps.

instuctions if you need them:
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

* Restart your computer
* After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
* Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
You will need to use the 'keyboard arrow keys' to navigate on this menu.
* Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
* Then choose your usual account.

Hi jake2k

Step 1
Close any open browsers.
Close/disable all anti virus, firewall and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix:

Open Notepad - it must be Notepad, not Wordpad.
Copy the text below in the code box by highlighting all the text and pressing Ctrl+C
File::
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\RandFont.dll

Folder::
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecAntiVirus]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Monitoring\SymantecFirewall]
"DisableMonitoring"=-
Go to the Notepad window and click Edit >> Paste
Then click File >> Save
Name the file "CFScript.txt" (including the quotes)
Save the file to your Desktop

The main ComboFix.exe program should be on your Desktop
Drag the file you just created... CFScript.txt and drop it on the main ComboFix.exe icon
as below.

Now please wait for ComboFix to finish running.

Please Note: Do not mouse click in the combofix window while it is running - this may cause your system to hang/crash

Step 2
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step 3
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u6...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step 4
Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This program will now start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
In your next reply, please submit:
New ComboFix.txt
Kaspersky scan results
and a new Hjt log.

Thanks.
