Hello ViviNYC,

my HijackTHis log run AFTER I removed a bunch of stuff. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

If you delete items that it shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself.
If you are do not have advanced knowledge about computers you should NOT fix entries using HijackThis without consulting an expert on using this program.

You have deleted many valid items. If you dont know what you doing then do not delete anything with Hijackthis!

Restore everything you've removed and we'll take it from there.

Open HijackThis
Click Open the Misc. Tools Sections button> Config screen> Backups Button
Place a check in all backed up entries and click Restore.

Reboot the computer and post a fresh log.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hello ViviNYC,

Please tell me what version of Java you are using. You can look in your Add/remove program listing.

You have some suspicious files we need to check.

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\MODEMM.sys

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.

Perform the same for next files:

C:\WINDOWS\uccspecc.sys

Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

NOTE: I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.

*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Beginners Guide to CCleaner

*******************************************

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

Please download the
OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Coupons
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\pinz1
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\IDE2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ExTmp
    C:\Program Files\??crosoft.NET /u
    C:\Documents and Settings\Vevev\Application Data\W?nSxS /u

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Note : If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
    C:\_OTMoveIt2\MovedFiles\********_******.log
    (where "********_******" is the "date_time")
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Caution: Be careful of what you copy and paste with this tool. OTMoveIt2 is a powerful program, designed to move highly persistent files and folders. Not following the directions as instructed or using incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system.

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer

Disable you AVG antivirus program before running Kaskpersky webscan.

BTW, did you uninstall Symantec? I see remenents in your log.

To disable AVG antivirus:
Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: Posted Image) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I’ll let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan

Note that you need to run this scan with Internet Explorer for it to work correctly.

If you have any problem running the scan to completion, disable your Antivirus and/or firewall temporarily, just refrain from surfing around while the scan is running and be sure to re-enable when done.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat step 1.
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows Kaspersky to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. Wait for the scanner to initialize and update its databases. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE,
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer" and the scan will begin.
8. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save Report As... button:
Under Save as type select Text file write name for the file and save it to your Desktop.
Locate the file at the Desktop, open it, then copy and paste that information in your next post.
9. Post the Kaspersky scan, the Virus Total scan results, the OTMoveIT2 log, a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

1. Java 2 Runtime Environment SE v1.4.2_03

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 5.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 5".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u5-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u5-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

2. Yes, I did uninstall Symantec, I haven’t had that it a LONG while.

Here's a link to Norton's own removal tool, which they developed in response to complaints that the program did not uninstall completely.
It contains instructions and a download link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...005033108162039

Note that you only need to perform steps one and two, since you have no interest in reinstalling the program.

After you run the tool, please confirm that the quarantine files are gone by navigating to C:\Program Files\ and checking to see if the folder Norton AntiVirus exists there. If it does, delete it.

I'm having problems sending the modemm.sys file to virus total. I tried every way to send it email, upload, I even downloaded the tool and I could not send it.

Any advice? Gmail said it was an executable and they don't send that type of file.

Hi ViviNYC,

It is not an executable, but a system file. It is only 86144 bytes, so you should be able to submit it to Virus Total.

If Virus Total is not working, then try using Jotti Online Scanner.

Go to Jotti Online File Scanner copy and paste C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\MODEMM.sys to the upload and scan it.

Let me know the results.
Copy and paste the output to this thread

Also try this:
Please double-click on My Computer and locate the file "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\MODEMM.sys".
Right-click on it and choose "Properties", then click on the "Version" tab at the top.
Click on "Comments", "Company", "File Version", and "Internal Name" and please post whatever the text in the box immediately to the right says for each.

This is the message I got when I tried to upload file to Jotti:

>>The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file<<

Here is the screenshot of the modemm.sys file

Hi ViviNYC,

I still have the virus. I still have pop ups

What is finding the virus? Do you have a location?
What pop ups are you getting?

Java just updated their program, so you need to download Java version 6
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of  Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language  jre-6u6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix checked"

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {16B435F6-B6CE-4F24-A568-944B27ED919C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\atgban.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Companion\Installs\cpn0\yt.dll (file missing)

*******************************************
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Documents and Settings\Vevev\My Documents\My Documents\TEMP\cute4032.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\wii\HTgn1dll.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.

AVG finds a downloader virus, Kapersky found 4 viruses, the popups I get are explorer windows with these sites.. the same group of sites randomly over and over again. I'm going to follow your current instructions and get the location of the files.

Thank you!
