I have no sound. Not even the little volume icon in the start menu. I installed all of the software my MOBO came with Windows xp pro sp 3 as well as all the software for everything else but no sound. In the device manager it shows the driver is missing for an undisclosed pci device under other devices.
Any ideas?

I would try Unknown Devices it does a really good job at identifying these unknown devices, let me know what it turns up and if you need help locating the driver.

When you do find it I would back it up so that if you ever have to reformat you don't have to go through this again.

This is what UKD revealed as the unknown PCI device. ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB600 High Definition Audio Controller. I am downloading what appears to be the correct driver as we speak. I will let you know if it works shortly. Thank you for your help.

Could this be a simple matter of a corrupt OS install?

It doesn't seem like it to me, The fact that Unknown devices seems the device also makes me think it is just a driver issue. Did you end up downloading the correct one.

PM me if you need help locating it.

My motherboard had known driver issues with onboard audio so i just installed a sound blaster SE audio card and everything worked perfect. They retail around 30 bucks so if you cant get drivers to work this might save you some headache.

I'm out of slots so a sound card is out. I installed vista 64 bit home premium and kubuntu and I have sound with both of those. I think I'm just gonna get a new copy of xp pro.
