O.K. after recieving many alert in the past 24 to 48 hours from pccillin about a trojan that it could not remove I started to look for more help.I got one msg that said it was cryp_tap2 and followed the instructions for removing that with both pc-cillin and combo fix. Still had errors popping up about the trojan and something tring to make a change to IE. So I tired scanning with spyware doctor for free. This found several cookies and and trojan Vmundo I think.Paid their fee and that is now gone but I still keep getting audio commercials playing at random times. Some last 30 seconds some 5 minutes.Nothing showing up under the running processes when I hear them...No way to shut them off. Other than that the computer seems fine now.It was very slow and hanging alot before all the scans. Now speed seems to be back and no pccillin alerts at all.just the unwanted audio. They seem to be adds for something but never get a name of a product or anything.

anyway here are the logs that the faq said to include hope you guys can help.

Hello there Greg and welcome to Bleeping Computer's security forum.
My name is David, I will be helping you with your log today.

It is a good idea to print off these instructions. There is a possibility some of the instructions will need to be carried out where internet access is not available. It is important that you complete the instructions in the right order, and that you don't miss out any steps.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Please download the Suspicious File Packer from here:
http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do not run it.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://clubgames.pogo.com/online2/pogop/as...aploader_v6.cab
O21 - SSODL: SrvUnknown - {90a04b97-086e-4fe2-9341-7edc4d56e1a1} - C:\WINDOWS\Resources\SrvUnknown.dll

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.

Please open the Suspicious File Packer you downloaded earlier.
Paste the following bold part into the Suspicious File Packer window:

C:\WINDOWS\grep.exe
C:\WINDOWS\fdsv.exe

Allow SFP to pack the file. This will generate a CAB archive on your desktop.
Leave it there for the time being.

Using Windows Explorer, please locate the following files/folders, and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lhahpvhk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\omvtpnom.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pgivcgom.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ceuumtcb.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\uhmvyjob <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\DCEBoot.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Resources\SrvUnknown.dll

I want you to clean your cache and cookies from your internet explorer.
There are a few infected files which need to be removed from your system.

° Close all instances of Internet Explorer .
° Go to your control panel and open "Internet Options".
° Click on the "General" tab.
° Click the "Delete Cookies" button, then the "Delete Files" button.
° If prompted, place a tick in the "Delete all offline content" box and click OK.

Also, please clean other Temporary files and Empty the Recycle Bin

° Go to start and click on the "run" button.
° Type the following in the box --> cleanmgr and click ok.
° Let it scan your system for files to remove.
° Make sure only Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked.
° Press OK to remove them.

Reboot back into normal mode.

Go to this page.
Enter the url of this thread in the first field.
Where it says, browse to the file that you want to submit, click the browse button next to the second field and browse to the CAB archive that was been created on your desktop.
The cab file will be called requested-files[*].cab (the * stands for the date and hour).
Then click the Send File button below.
Please let me know when you have submitted the files.

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

o.k. I'll print those off and follow them but I have a new problem.

After running the DSS program for the to generate the log last night, everything seemed fine.I ran nothing else related to removing any viruses, just did a little more browsing on this sight looking for similar problems.Everything was great no more unwanted audio for the hour or so that I was on nice fast speed.

This morning I boot up to try and check for reply's and.....The SBC browser will not log in to my account. No big deal that has happened before so I try regular Internet explorer.....Nothing it just hangs up.tried to ping no reply, tried to log into the modem or router with IE and no go either. Just keeps waiting on the page to load.

I have 3 computers all sharing the same DSL line so I switched to this computer and it connected fine...Had to go to work.

Now home and the original CPU still has the same problem.I had an idea at work so came home and downloaded firefox to this cpu then moved it to the original with a usb drive. It works fine. tried to re-download SBC browser but can't must have IE running to allow it to download( it appears to just be a modified IE if you are not familiar with it.).

So big question is is there something in those logs or part of the virus that stopped IE from working? Or is it something else? I think I know how to uninstall re-install IE but after reading some of the logs here do not want to untill getting a response from you. I don't want to make things worse.

thanx
Greg

Hi Greg, thanks for clarifying the situation. So, when you installed firefox on the system, the internet worked fine and you were able to browse onto websites as normal? If that's the case, then obviously there is some sort of problem with your internet explorer. This could be caused by the malware..

It could be that when the malware you have on the system (which is pretty nasty) is removed, internet explorer will work again. On the other hand, it could be that the malware has done the damage already, and even when we've removed it, the problem will still exist. There is a possibility of reinstalling internet explorer, but at the moment I want to try and remove the malware and see if that resolves the problem.

If you have working internet by means of using Firefox then go ahead with the fix...
Only by removing the malware will we known whether it's the cause - I would imagine it is!

Hey! The two files you uploaded appear to be legitimate, so that's good news..

Please open notepad and and copy and paste next bold in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad]
"SrvUnknown"=-

Save this as "fix.reg" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
Note that this scanner will only work on Internet Explorer, so please use this browser for the scan.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.

When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

O.K. sorry about the delay but I had to work late.

Something we did yesterday helped. IE and yahoo browser both started working again after you logged off last night.I left the computer on for hours and no unwanted audio..So the symptoms are gone now lets hope you find the cause.

I ran Kapersky (wow that took a LOOONNNGG time) here's that log.

Hi Greg, just a couple more things to do now..

Firstly please find and delete the following infected files:
C:\101.tmp
C:\104.tmp
C:\Downloads\SmashUpDerbySetup-dm[1].exe

Please also remove this folder which contains infected backups:
C:\QooBox

We need to purge your infected system restore points.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Check Turn off System Restore, click Apply, and then click OK.
More information on how to disable your system restore can be found here.

We want to create a new, clean restore point. Please first reboot your computer.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer, then click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab near the top of the window.
Uncheck "Turn off System Restore", click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point - Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup".
Click Create, and after it has created the restore point, click "Close".
Further instructions on creating a restore point can be found here

Please reboot a final time and let me know how the PC is running.
I see a clean Hijackthis log now!

O.K. Thank you hope this one is clean.

Everything has been working fine since thursday night. So yes it seems fine now.The errant audio has not been around since the first night.IE has been working since the first set of fixes. All seems well.

Thank you again. I'll post hopefully the last hijackthis log in a minute.

Ant thoughts on where these came from or how to stop it from happening again? That one file the smash up derby one was from our 13 year old son who has been told over and over NOT to download minigames. But that one was from September so I don't think it was the cause of the most recent problems. Any ideas?. I like the way pccillin runs but if it's not catching everything then maybe we need a different anti-spy.Or maybe just a case of one that slipped through before pccillin had a definition for it?

Thanx again for all the help.

here's the log

Glad I could help!
The latest log is looking clean!

Ant thoughts on where these came from or how to stop it from happening again?

These type of infections normally come bundled with applications that you might install without checking them out first, for example audio/movie codecs that you are prompted to install from dodgy websites. Another big source of infection is P2P file sharing, where a large number of files that are available to download are simply trojan downloaders and installers etc. Finally, crack sites providing serials and keygens to "crack" open applications you need to pay for, are the worst for this. Nearly every crack site has malicious code waiting to be injected into your system.

I would stick with pc-cillin if I were you, it is a very good program. Threats arise continually and it's impossible for an AV to keep you protected instantly. They update their definitions daily, which is why it is a good reason to update on a daily basis.

As for keeping secure in the future, I've got a bit of information that should help.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will be reduced dramatically.

Use an Anti Virus Software -
* It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine.
* This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. This link has listings of stand-alone anti virus programs:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus
* I would recommend Grisoft's AVG or AVAST.
* These are the more secure and better ones.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall -
* I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
* Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over.
* Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
* For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
* Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls
* I would recommend ZoneAlarm as a firewall as it's easy to use.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently -
* It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly.
* This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
* If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly

Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy- Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
* This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection.
* You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware.
* You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot.
* A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware

Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster -
* SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
* A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
* Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

If you have any addition questions just ask...
David

Thank you thank you thank you..

Only the bundled stuff really has any bearing on us I think. We don't do the crack of pay software nor the p2p file sharing or at least not that I know of.

So i'll stick with pccillin and add back in adaware we had that before but have deleted it for some reason.

Other than the other software we prettymuch already have it all.

My wireless router has a firewall of it's own plus we run pccillin's firewall and the the windows firewall.

Use pccillin as our main line of defense plus we don't download our e-mail it's all webmail from our ISP unless you set it up to download. And The ISP mail program scans all incoming and outgoing files for viruses.

I thought we were pretty safe and it looks like I'm taking all the right precautions. Just that something finally got through. I can live with that.

Thanx again
Greg
