Hello everyone

I had some issues yesterday with a virus that caused several very obvious problems (background changed, bogus notifications and pop-ups etc.) I thought that I had resolved my issues but when I went to use google to look for something, it came up with results that aren't ordinary. It looks like the desired results are there for a split second, but then it changes to results like monstermarketplace.com and areaguides.net etc. When I use the "I'm feeling lucky" button for google, it brings up the desired page, so its obvious that something is altering the results after the search is done. I've been trying to fix this all morning without any progress, so I'm hoping another brain can help me figure this one out.

Also in IE when right-clicking a download link and selecting "Save target as" I get an error saying:
--------
Internet Explorer cannot download.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.
--------

It happens for anything I try to save using that method.
I try to keep my PC neat and clean, so stuff like this really aggravates me. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Norton 360. I have Vista also as dual boot but I don't think that matters here, but in case you were wondering what all the partitions were for

Here are the logs that you request:

Hello Sixthelement,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CTHelper] CTHELPER.EXE

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer.

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

There is an issue running combofix on my computer. When I doubleclick it, a small window appears with a bar going across (like its loading) and then that goes away and a blue command prompt window shows up for a split second and then that goes away as well, then everything stops. There are no prompts of any kind. Any further help would be appreciated

Okie dokie.....let's do something else then. Delete ComboFix for the time being.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.

Hello,

Give ComboFix another try then....if you have any protection programs yelling about it pr the changes it wants to make, then disable it until it finishes running. If it still won't work, we'll do something else.

Thanks,
tea

Yep, always something else to try.

Please print these instructions or copy them to Notepad (or another word processor), and save it for easier reference. This is because we will be in Safe Mode during the fix and you won’t be able to access the Internet to view these instructions.

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition and save that file to your desktop.

This is a 30-day trial of the program -- This means that after 30 days the "background guard" protection will be de-activated. However, this version can continue to be manually updated and used as an on-demand scanner forever.
  • Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the setup program.
  • Once the setup is complete you will need to run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  • On the top of the main screen select the "Update" icon, then under the "Manual update" section click the "Start update" button.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  • Once the update has completed (the progress bar will display "Update successful!") select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  • Once in the "Settings" screen:
    • Click on "Recommended actions" -> select "Quarantine".
    • Under "Reports:" -> select "Do not automatically generate reports".
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Please do NOT run a scan yet!
Next, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Reboot your computer.
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but just before the Windows icon appears, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, reboot the computer and try again.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.
  • Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the "Safe Mode" menu item, and then press "Enter".
Then please run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware:

IMPORTANT: Do NOT open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.
  • Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
  • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab. Click on "Complete System Scan".
  • AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
  • Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select the "Apply all actions" button, AVG Anti-Spyware will then display "All actions have been applied" on the right hand side.
    • Next select the "Save Report" button at the bottom.
    • Then select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and save it as a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important!).
  • Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system normally into Windows. Please post the contents of the AVG Anti-Spyware report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hello,

I didn't see anything apparent to indicate it, but let's run this puppy on it, just in case it's hiding :

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:
http://downloads.subratam.org/Fixwareout.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/lonny/Fixwareout.exe

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts. You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so. Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

Once the desktop loads please post the text that will open (report.txt) and a new Hijackthis log.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

I think I may have run that before. Doesn't look like it found anything  Problem still continues.

I was reading on other forums and saw that some of the newer nasty buggers have a way of preventing programs from running. So I downloaded combofix again but renamed it to combofax upon saving, and wouldn't you know it worked  So hopefully we can get somewhere with this...

Oh yeah, and it seems that internet doesn't want to work at all on the infected computer after running combofix. IE just keeps saying Connecting... but never loads any pages. I don't know if this means progress or things are getting worse.

Combofix:

Hello,

Try one or both of these and see if your connection comes back.

Click Start>Run> Type in (or copy and paste) ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter. You'll get a confirmation that the flush was successful.

FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :
Click on Start, Control Panel, select the Network and Internet Connections category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

If that doesn't get it, try this one:

Go to Start > Run and type cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type next in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
hit enter.

REBOOT!!

Regards,
tea
