I am getting warnings from XP Antivirus that my computer is infected. My kids use this laptop more than me, and I am not really sure how XP Antivirus got on my computer, but there are new icons on my desktop for it, and Malware Alert, and Spy Shredder. I have Avast 4.7 loaded on this laptop and have been using that for a couple of years now. Anyway, when XP Antivirus runs a system scan (does it automatically when I bootup) it reports that there are 43 malware items on my system that I need to get rid of. I also get a security warning that says "Your computer has been running slower than normal. Please remove infected files." I get a couple of different popups from XP Antivirus every few minutes that tell me the same thing. The XP Antivirus version on this machine will only do a diagnostic. In order to get it to remove anything it finds you must register it. In order to "register" your product, you have to buy a $50 license. I went to my Avast antivirus and had it run a check; it first told me that it needed to be updated (the virus definitions) but when I try to do that, it will not connect to the website to download the new defs. I ran a diagnostic with Avast anyway, and it didn't show any infection. XP Antivirus shows that I have Spyware, Adware, Backdoor, Trojans, and also a dialer infecting my system. One thing on my systen is something called Zlob.PornAdvertiser.ba which apparently places shortcuts to porno websites on your desktop. Not good!!! The kids are not allowed to use the laptop until I get it fixed, now.

What do I do? Do I go ahead and buy the XP Antivirus license? This option does not appeal to me, as I feel this too is a kind of invasion of my computer.
Do I continue to try to upgrade the Avast virus definitions? Is something stopping me from downloading the nw virus definitions? Is Avast up to the task of protecting my computer? Is there a better software out there that I should use? I was told that Avast worked good and doesn't bog your computer down with so much stuff, unlike Norton. I have Norton on my desktop, and it isn't having any of these problems, so that might tell me something; you get what you pay for maybe? I don't know.

Thank you for any help or advise you can give me!!!!!

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Acan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet.
Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
  • Under the "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

IMPORTANT NOTE: One or more of the identified infections was a backdoor Trojan. Backdoor Trojans and IRCBots are very dangerous because they provide a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information like passwords, personal and financial data which they send back to the hacker. Read the Danger: Remote Access Trojans.

Another one of the identified infections was related to a rootkit componet. Rootkits are very dangerous because they use advanced techniques as a means of accessing a computer system that bypasses security mechanisms and steal sensitive information which they send back to the hacker. Many rootkits can hook into the Windows 32-bit kernel, and patch several APIs to hide new registry keys and files they install. Remote attackers use backdoor Trojans and rootkits as part of an exploit to to gain unauthorized access to a computer and take control of it without your knowledge.

If your computer was used for online banking, has credit card information or other sensitive data on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for banking, email, eBay, paypal and online forums. You should consider them to be compromised. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the infected one. If not, an attacker may get the new passwords and transaction information. Banking and credit card institutions should be notified of the possible security breach. Because your computer was compromised please read How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

Although the backdoor Trojan and rootkit were identified and removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the backdoor Trojan has been removed the computer is now secure. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to wipe the drive clean, reformat and reinstall the OS. Please read "When should I re-format? How should I reinstall?"

Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will do our best to help clean the computer of any infections but we cannot guarantee it to be trustworthy or that the removal will be successful. Let me know how you wish to proceed.

Quietman7,

Thanks for the advice! This computer is never used for online banking, but I have purchased things online with it in the past. I am talking over two years ago. Would this still present a problem? I did not use Paypal for the few purchases I made online with this computer. Would my creditcard information still be on my system somewhere?

I am having a problem with this computer since running the Mbam yesterday. As you said it might, Mbam advised that I reboot the system so that it could get rid of difficult items. I clicked "OK", and the machine rebooted itself. I initially forgot what you said about rebooting in safe mode, so it tried to reboot normal. When it got to the initial HP screen it just sat there and would never boot up totally. So, I shut it down, restarted, and this time chose "Restart in Safe Mode". It scrolled some data down the screen for a second (like it was in DOS mode), then it went to a screen I had never seen before. It looks like its in DOS mode (black screen with white letters, no graphics) and it says "Safe Mode" in all four corners of the screen. Across the top of the screen it has the following; Microsoft ® Windows XP ® (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158: Service Pack 2). The computer will not go beyond this screen. I have tried several times, and have left it run for an hour to see if it advances beyond this screen. What is the problem here? Have I screwed my computer up?

Probably so.

You were heavily infected with a with a smörgåsbord of malware. There are no shortcuts or guarantees when it comes to malware removal. Sometimes it takes several efforts with different tools to do the job. Even then, with some types of malware infections, the task can be arduous. In some instances an infection may have caused so much damage to your system that it cannot be successfully cleaned or repaired. In those cases, recovery is not possible and the only option is to reformat, wipe your drive clean and reinstall install the OS.

Can you boot up normally?

No, it wont boot up normally. When it rebooted after the Mbam suggested to, it made it as far as the HP splash screen but wouldn't go any further. I turned it off after waiting for approx. 15 minutes for it to do something, and this time it went to the screen that says "you computer was improperly stopped" and gives you the option of how to reboot it, but before I finished reading the options it defaulted to the normal bootup, and again went to the HP splash screen but went no further. I then went to back and tried rebooting in Safe Mode a couple of times but got only the results mentioned in my last post. What do you think?

If you cannot boot up in Normal or Safe mode, you may be able to use a Windows XP bootable Floppy Disk to boot from a diskette instead of your hard drive. If your hard drive's boot sector or Windows' basic boot files have been corrupted, this disk will circumvent the problem and boot you into Windows. If you don't have an emergency boot floppy, you may be able to use one created on another PC running Windows XP but there's no guarantee that it will boot your machine.

"Resolving Boot Issues with a Boot Floppy Disk".
"How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks" and select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System. The Setup boot disks are available so that you can run the Setup program on computers that cannot use a bootable CD-ROM.

Another option is to create a Bootable CD:
Bart's way to create bootable CD-Roms
Ultimate Boot CD
How to write a CD/DVD image or ISO
Creating A Windows XP Recovery Console CD Image

You can try doing a "Repair Install with Recovery Console". The Recovery Console is a Windows utility that provides a DOS-like command line from which you can run some repair programs. If you have a Microsoft Windows CD-ROM, you can get to the Recovery Console by booting from that CD and pressing any key when you told to 'Press any key to boot from CD'. At the 'Welcome to Setup' screen, press r for Repair.

"Langa Letter: XP's No-Reformat, Nondestructive Total-Rebuild Option"
"How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console".
"How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting".

If you don't have your XP CD you can download an ISO of the Recovery Console files:
Recovery Console ISO file

Burn it as an image to a disk to get a bootable CD which will startup the Recovery Console for troubleshooting and fixing purposes. This is especially useful for those with OEM systems with factory restore partitions or disks but no original installation CD. If you are not sure how to burn an image, please read How to write a CD/DVD image or ISO.

IMO however, the better course of action would be to reformat and reinstall the OS.

You can start a new topic in the Hardware forum if you need assistance with this. Hardware is not my area of expertise but we have advanced members here who can walk you through step by step.
