So, I have been trying to figure out if either of the 6400's has an unlocked multiplier, anyone know? If not, is it better to go with the X2 5000 BE? Any help would be appreciated.

the 6400x2 BE

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819103191

has been deactivated, it already ran hot as heck with a premium cooler, it basically had not enough head room for overclocking anyway

the 5000 BE is a different story, however you will need a better motherboard than foxconn makes

so based on my situation for a little upgrade, i should stick with the regular 6400 so i dont need to upgrade the mobo too. i am working on my next machine, but i need to save a good amount of cash first. i just want to upgrade this one for a little more speed for now. thanks.

I think you could do it with your present setup and parts?

It's just a matter of setting the memory down, put HT on 4x(800) and start raising the fsb gradually watching temperature and testing along the way and monitoring the memory clock, when you approach 25%, HT is back to stock and then you have to decide/bench are you close enough with the memory to stock, whether to stop or not.

Then if you find temperature is the limiting factor after applying load for any duration, you buy a premium air cooler

the thing about the 5000BE is you don't have to fool with all this, just raise the multiplier and add premium air

exactly what geil ram are you running?

will your bios adjust mem voltage up to 2.1-2.2 volts?

that's the big drawback to using premium ram, which really helps the amd64's

2 gigs is fine for dual core and xp

i am pretty sure i can change that voltage. i didnt check yet, but i remember it when i first got this up and running.

on another note, what do you know about prime95? i was running it for about 2 hours, no errors, but i had my Nvidia monitor up watching temps, and the CPU temp disappeared, so i closed it, when trying to reopen Nvidia monitor, it said my BIOS doesnt support that file or something like that. what happened???

coretemp is a good application for temperature reporting, I don't use prime95

everest ultimate might be best if the trial will read core temp

any foxconn bios is suspect in my book, I would use the latest

well, right now running prime95 my temps are at 50/51 and 44/45 for each core. why does one run so much hotter? the Nvidia monitor i have only shows the low one, i wonder why?

well, so i think we've decided there isnt much difference in either 6400, so but the retail instead of the BE so i can at least have good service. either one of those would require the same OCing, not just an increase in the multiplier.
