For the past week now, I've been having problems with explorer.exe. I originally assumed the problem occurred because of some registry fixes a program I use made, but after restoring the changes, the problem persisted, so I have no idea what caused it. When I log into my computer (onto the Administrator account), explorer loads, taskbar, desktop, and all, but then about ten seconds later, it closes. It tries to restart itself, but the same thing occurs, so I close it with Task Manager. If I reopen it manually, it stays open momentarily, just as before, then it disappears, but this time the process stays in the list of running programs. I tried repairing Windows, but that didn't work. Scanning with Spybot, Ad-aware, AVG, and Xoftspy found nothing. I can still run other programs if I run them through Task Manager (excluding Internet Explorer and Firefox, neither of which opens, so I'm using Opera), but I would love to get this fixed. Here's a HijackThis log from my computer. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply  In the time since my initial post, I fixed the problem. It turned out to be Vundo spyware (which, on the HijackThis log was vtstq.dll). However, in the process of trying to solve the problem, I assumed it was a problem with Windows, as my spyware scanning programs didn't find anything at first, so I repaired my Windows installation. Since then, I've instead cursed myself with random shutdowns. During the Windows repair, there were several files that it said were missing (on the disk, I assume) and it couldn't repair/rewrite them (I have these written down, if you would like me to type them up), so I just told it to skip them, as that was my only option other than stopping the steup. I don't know if those would cause the problem, but to my knowledge, random shutdowns are very hard to fix because of an extensive amount of possibilities for the cause. I would, of course, love help with this, if it's available. Should I start a new thread?

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear you've had so much trouble. If this isn't malware related now then it probably is best to post in the Windows Forum here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/56/windows-xp-home-and-professional/

Hope it works out for you, and take care,
tea
