Alright, I followed the guide at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/3341/how-to-remove-home-search-assistant-cws-ns3-backdoor-bdd/ .

Actually, I went through it twice. Overall it seems to be a good guide.. but unfortunately there are some things it did not remove on my system (well my friends system here).

In Safe mod.. nothing shows up with any of the program scans. (Spybot/ad-aware/spysweeper/cws shredder. etc)

When I log into his normal user account spysweeper comes up with this:

CWS_NS3 Hijacker

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main || search page
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\internet explorer\main || search bar

HijackThis also comes up with this:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

I have tried deleting them with the programs they showed up in as well as manually.. no luck. Also, the zrkif.dll file does NOT show up in my windows folder. Also, I've done a few virus scans with 3 different programs and since the Trend system clean removed several traces .. I have not seen anything since, as far as Virus' go.

Now.. I used Spybot to force the homepage to stay at www.alltheweb.com + The immunize option shows that everything is blocked and all the shields in spysweeper are active and are staying active upon reboot.

Nothing seems to be acting weird or wrong outside of what spysweeper and hijack this are showing. The computer is working just fine with no popups and whatnot.

If you wish to see my Hijackthis log.. here ya go. ;) Thanks for any help.

You are so close!

Fix these with hjt:

1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Reboot and delete:

C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll

Sorry, maybe I didn't write that well above.

I did indeed delete those keys with highjackthis. I also looked for (bit couldn't find) the file they were directing too. I do have all files set to visible so it should not have been hidden.

However, upon reboot. I am still having the above mentioned problems.

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.alltheweb.com/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Then delete these files or directories (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll

Reboot your computer to go back to normal mode and post a new log.

Click on start, then run, and type msconfig and press enter. Then click on the startup tab and uncheck the entry associated with:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpySweeper] "C:\Program Files\Webroot\Spy Sweeper\SpySweeper.exe" /0

Press ok and reboot.

Then do not open IE and fix these three entries:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\zrkif.dll/sp.html#12345
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank

reboot and post a new log

Dont bother..just make sure you follow the instructions in this post.

Log looks clean...great job!

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet

Glad I was able to help.
