I ran into the same problem several users have - virus warning popus, browser hijack warnings, new "anti-virus" icons showing up on the desktop, red X on the C:/ drive icon, etc. From reading others posts, I've managed to get rid of the obvious problems but I'm sure there's still things lurking around. Web pages and downloads often freeze and my network connection drops more often than before. Here's my HJT and DSS logs:

Welcome to the Bleepingcomputer forum.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Double-click smitfraudfix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Since it's been awhile since I first posted, here's the current problem - system freezes when I try to open a hyperlink within an email. Oftentimes it opens a new window then stalls. I still feel there's something left over from when I was infected before. Here's the file from running SmitFraudFix:

SmitFraudFix v2.314

Scan done at 21:47:12.28, Wed 04/16/2008
Run from C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
OS: Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600] - Windows_NT
The filesystem type is NTFS
Fix run in normal mode

unfortunately that didn't show up what i expected.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
  • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Please copy this page to *Notepad* and save to your desktop for reference as you will not have any browsers open while you are carrying out portions of these instructions.

It's IMPORTANT to carry out the instructions in the sequence listed below.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Open *notepad* and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Killall::

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fdfddc5_g.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe which is on the Desktop.

Posted Image

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.

This will start ComboFix again.(it may ask you to reboot your computer)

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt

Rerun HJT,and put a checkmark beside these :-

O4 - Global Startup: MRI_DISABLED
O23 - Service: hpdjaio - Unknown owner - C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\LOCALS~1\Temp\hpdjaio.exe (file missing)

now close all windows and browsers and click FIX CHECKED

Please copy and paste the ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log in your next reply please and
let me know how it is running.

*Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall*

Thanks - I'm off to work, will check back tonight. Most things are working ok. Ironically, I could not open the link to this page from within my email - I had to paste the url into my browser to open it. All I was getting was a blank window and about one bar in the download meter, showing waiting...waiting.... Maybe it's just a new IE feature

Becky

those logs look clean now.

Go to Start | Run
type or copy the following:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll .then click OK.

Do the same with these files. Go to Start | Run Type in the following one at a time. Then click ok.
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

let me know if any won't register.

then try the links again.

All registered except Mshtml - I got a RegSvr32 error message box that said "Mshtml.dll was loaded, but the DlRegisterServer entry point was not found. This file can not be registered."

However, the links work now.

DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
To flush out infected restore points.
Then restart your system restore.(same page).then create a new restore point :-

click START\ALL PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEM TOOLS\SYSTEM RESTORE. click on "create new restore point"
click on NEXT and follow the prompts.[/color]

this is to ensure that if you have to do a system restore in the future that you don't get all the infections reinstalled again.

Then :-

Download and scan with CCleaner
  • Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbar-free or Slim versions instead of the Standard Build.
  • Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
    Then select "Cookies"
Move any cookies you wish to retain, e.g. login cookies, in the left-hand window to the right-hand window by highlighting them and clicking the right arrow in the centre.
  • Then select the items you wish to clean up.
    In the Windows Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section.
    • Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "System" section.
    • Clean all entries in the "Advanced" section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

    In the Applications Tab:

    • Clean all entries in the Mozilla Firefox Section.
    • Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
    • Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
    • Clean any others that you choose.

  • Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
  • A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
  • Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
  • Click "exit" when done.
then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

HOW DID I GET INFECTED

Several items were cleaned up. Not much to defrag. Links are working fine now. Do you need to see any logs?
