Just installed XP on an laptop and am at the login screen. It has "m" which I set as the name and "guest." Each one of these has a password! I never set a password during setup for anything. It keeps saying "The system cannot log you on due to the follwing error: The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Please try again or consult your system administrator." What is going on? This is a personal PC and has or never will be on a network? How do I get around this?

Lots to read on this error message...but it mostly seems to apply to Win 2K and Windows Server 2000/2003.

Beyond my ability to guess .

Is this a genuine Windows XP installation CD, a restore CD from a computer manufacturer, or a copy of a CD?

I suspect that the installation CD has been sysprepped to join a domain once XP is installed.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
